How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different because for one we have a new kitchen structure where my wife prepares her meals, so we no longer have to be chocking from the smoke emitted from the fireplace. My heart is also at peace because I eventually managed to pay the dowry to my in-laws. These are some of the things that I have always wanted to do in the past but then I have only been getting very little income that is only able to feed us from hand to mouth.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think that the organization is a champion in terms of changing peoples lives within the villages where we live. For instance, for me, I was able to pay dowry which I had never been able to do in the past. I also built a new kitchen structure where my wife now cooks quite comfortably. In the past, my wife used to cook in the living room which because we had no kitchen space. it was a very unhealthy thing doing such a thing but then we did not have any other option.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
As a young man, I had always waited for an opportunity where I could pay dowry after getting married to my wife but then due to the limited financial abilities, I was never able to make it to that level, however, my dreams came true when Give Directly came to our village and gave us the unconditional cash transfers. My in-laws were very happy when I finally managed to pay the dowry, which of course is always considered as a special achievement according to our traditions.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference is that I am now more peaceful than before. This is because the burdens that were weighing me down have now been settled. My sons have a place to rest at night that is my kitchen during the day. I have also managed to pay my wife's bridal price which was a headache whenever I remembered I had not paid.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so happy because now my plans that were handicapped due to finances were finally going to materialize. I gave thanks to God and started budgeting on how to allocate the money to aviod wastage.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
Upon receiving my first transfer I bought building materials to help me build a kitchen that during the night acts as a room for my sons. I also bought a new set of sofas. Now my visitors can comfortably sit on when they visit me at home unlike before my visitors could sit on stools and water jerricans. The remaining amount I bought two cows and escorted them to my father-in-law as bridal price for my wife.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means formalizing the marriage with my wife. I got married ten years ago but no dowry has been paid since I have no money to buy cows. This has dennied me the freedom to visit my parents-in-law as dictated by the cultural values. I hope by paying dowry, the chapter of freedom, human dignity, self-worth and celebration of my marriage shall have begun.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon after casual work. In the morning hours, I am involved in spraying herbicides in the sugarcane plantations. I usually complete my work by the afternoon and get paid for some little money. By this time, I am able to buy food and other basic needs like paying school fees for my children. This makes me feel happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am facing in life is unreliable source of income. I am unskilled and therefore unable to compete and bargain for better paying job opportunities. I depend majorly on farm casual labor that has meager wages that cannot meet our daily basic needs. This makes us skip major meals, wear old clothes and sometimes suffer from malnutrition related ailments. Being unable to provide for my family's basic needs make me feel unhappy.
