How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years, I would like to own dairy cows, and I am optimistic that this will soon be achieved. Since I already have goats, it will be easier for me to sell some of the offspring once they mature and buy the cows. Therefore, I trust that from the benefits I will be getting from those cows, I will be able to pay school fees for my son with ease, unlike before when I used to strain. Additionally, I will be able to sustain myself even after GiveDirectly has finished its program in my village.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by coming to our village and transforming my life positively. The idea of giving unconditional cash transfers worked well for me because I had the privilege to choose what to purchase. On the other hand, I do not see anything that needs to be changed as they move to the neighbouring villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent almost $400 of my recent transfer on buying building materials. I had always wanted to build a decent house for my family, and finally, my dream came true. I was now ready to build a two-room house to replace the previous one, whose roof was dilapidated and on the verge of collapsing. For over 2 years now, I have been forced to shelter at my elder son's house, which made me a bit uncomfortable, and I needed the freedom that comes with being in your place. It also reminded me of my spouse, who abandoned me for another woman in town. I am so happy now that I have a decent place to call home; this has equally restored my dignity as a mother. Apart from that, I bought two goats worth $60, which I am currently keeping on my homestead. I settled on buying them since they would be my source of generating income. Goats reproduce twice a year, and to me, this means an increase in investments. This will reduce my financial burden, considering that I have been relying on subsistence farming for our survival. Additionally, I managed to clear college fees for my son, who is in his final year pursuing mechanical engineering. My wish has always been to see all my children realize their educational goals. I believe this will enable them to be responsible people in the future, and I am sure that they will take good care of me as well. Finally, I can now comfortably provide for my family of four, and thanks to GiveDirectly, you have transformed my life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Around 3 o'clock, when I was hiding from the sun beneath a tree outside my house, my phone rang with a message. Because I cannot read or write, I asked my aide to translate the strange message after the phone rang twice quickly. When he informed me that GiveDirectly had sent me the initial transfer of $550, I was perplexed. I was overjoyed to get the money because I knew I would finally be able to realize my ambition of having a nicer place to live.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The bread-baking business which I depended on was not reliable since it was seasonal. I only managed to sell during school days because my potential customers are students. It did not enable me to repair my house in advance until it collapsed. Peace of mind was at a distance from me, I was disturbed and uncomfortable living in my son's house. I felt like I was not doing just to him since I had taken his private space. Thanks to GiveDirectly; the transfer changed the tune of the song and it enabled me to see a green light in owning a house. Even though the house is still underway there is a light that I will have my own very soon courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I made the decision to build a new house after receiving the first transfer because the one I had crumbled. I spent $361 for 38 pieces of iron sheets, ridges, building poles, and rafters since I wanted a large house. Despite having all the necessary materials, I have not yet begun building since I have ran out of money. I'm eagerly awaiting the second transfer so that I may start building my home. I'm currently waiting for mine while sleeping at my son's house. Even though the construction of my house has not yet begun, I am proud of GiveDirectly for how far I have come because gathering all the building supplies is a significant accomplishment. If it weren't for the organization, my bread-baking business could not have supported me thus far, so I would not have done this fantastic work. I bought food for my family with the small amount that was left over.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
As you can see, my house is nearly collapsing because it's completely worn out and hasn't been repaired since my husband disappeared. The roof that is made of palm leaves is badly leaking and the walls are equally weak because all the supporting poles are already eaten up by vermin. This is what I want to do with my money. When I receive first transfer, I will connect piped water to my home at $100 because I'll need the it during construction. Thereafter I'm going to build a new one , at least three rooms with iron roof at around $500. If I'll still be remaining with some money, I'll pay school fees for my child who's in polytechnic and has been just getting support from his siblings. I know he's suppose to be my responsibility even though I'm not capable at the moment.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I'm normally very happy whenever I received support from my children who are working both in Kilifi and Mombasa towns. They do not have good jobs that are well paying as most of them are just menial workers; house helps, construction workers and shop attendants. I always appreciate a lot when I receive their support, mostly at the end of every month depending on whether they have other comments of their own. This is what we service on as a family and that's why it makes so happy to receive it. They do send between $10 to $30 each month.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I currently do not have any source of income, neither do I have the strength to do those extremely physical types of job that are available in this village, like working for manganese mining companies. This is a polygamous family and we used to rely on our husband for financial support until he abandoned us eight years ago when he married a third wife whom we've not seen yet. Words has it that he's living with her in Mombasa town where he works as a truck driver and hasn't visited the village nor sent any support for that long. To make ends meet, personally I have tried farming but the drought is too much. So I resorted to depending on my eldest children who take turns in taking care of me and also supporting their last sibling through village polytechnic.
