How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I am now living in a better shelter something that I would not have accomplished without the aid from GiveDirectly. Back then, I was spending sleepless nights during the rainy season. Occasionally, I had to seek shelter in my neighbor's kitchen during the long rains. In addition, I was able to clear the fees arrears of my children, and I am no longer worried about what to do to cater to their education this year. Lastly, The transfer comes at a time when I needed it most because I had an accident and it supported me in seeking proper medical care.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in enrolling me into the program, I would not have been able to construct a decent house in my life without the aid. Furthermore, the selection of the eligible households was done without any discrimination. I do not see anything the it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $230 of my second transfer to complete the construction of my house by purchasing timbers, 6 more Iron sheets, and paid labor charges. Before the transfer, I was living in a small, leaking grass-thatched house which was not enough to fully accommodate both myself and our household's utensils. In addition, I used part of the transfer to seek medical expenses for myself since I was very sick when I received the transfer. Furthermore, I spent $70 to clear the fee balances for my children that are in primary school. The remaining amount assisted in buying enough food stock for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer notification around noon when I was having lunch with my family. When I checked the contents, I realized it was a message from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received my first transfer. I felt happy and thanked them for their financial help.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now building an iron roofed house to live with my family. I have been living in a grass thatched house and my plan was to one day upgrade to a better house. Whenever it rained, I would be in serious trouble and had to seek shelter from neighbours. I was not able to renovate it because the little income from burning and selling charcoal was only enough for my the family's basic needs. I am now at peace having a decent and iron roofed house to live with my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials which include 24 pieces of iron sheets, building poles in order to construct a new house. I was previously living in a grass thatched house and always leaking whenever it rains. I had to seek refuge from my neighbours who had iron roofed houses. I am glad that I now have a nice house to comfortably live with my family. In addition, I paid the labour cost involved. Apart from this, I also paid for school fees for my children on amount that remained so they would be allowed to continue with their studies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money I will build a house because the main house fell due to heavy rainfall forcing me to spend three months living in the kitchen with my 3 young children. I will use 50,000 Kenya shillings to build a three-roomed house for my family. I will use some amount to buy food and then save some to pay school fees for my children when schools resume.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day. This is usually my time to rest after a busy day. With casual jobs , my energy is usually drained at the end of the day. I spend my evenings bonding with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I work as casual laborers. My spouse works in the construction industry while I am a charcoal vendor. The income which we get every month is 10,000 Kenya shillings which we use for our daily basic needs and any financial emergency in the family. Due to the little income we get, we have not been able to build another house for the family as well as initiating other projects.Financial problem is therefore the biggest hardship in my life.
