How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At first, I had planned to use my transfers in order to buy a dairy cow. I knew that owning a dairy cow would benefit my family so much in that, we shall not need to spend any money on buying milk for household use. However, due to the prolonged drought, I changed my mind and therefore developed a new goal. The new goal was to expand my business by investing all my transfers in it. I am glad that upon channeling my transfers into the business, it is currently doing better than before. From it, I can make sales of up to KES 100,000 per day, unlike before when I could make sales ranging from KES 50,000-KES 60,000 daily.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well in supporting all the needy in the remote areas without any form of discrimantion. As a result of the unconditional cash transfers, communities have noticed a great improvement in their living standards. The rate of children being sent home due to school fees arears has equally gone down, and this has changed the perception of our people. Since GiveDirectly staffs are uncomprised in their way of operations, I believe there is nothing that the organization does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all my second transfer, KES 55,000 on expanding my business. The business mainly deals in maize and wheat flour as the key availe products. By virtue of investing in additional money in the business, it has greatly picked up and I always make sales estimate of KES 100,000 per day. As a result of the business good performance, I am optimistic that I shall soon diversify the products I sell. This will increase my source of income hence supporting my family will no longer be burdensome.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 9 a.m. and I was at my shop. I was going about my normal duties when I received a message notification. On checking my phone, I was met with a lovely surprise. I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. My eyes could not believe it. Joy filled my heart at the realisation that my life was about to change for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving this transfer, my life has truly transformed positively. Even though I have owned my shop for a while now, the earnings have not been enough to enable me to provide food, shelter, clothing and education for my three children. I would often make a gross profit of just KES 8,000 a day, which is too little to cater for our living expenses. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. With this transfer, I was able to buy more goods for my business. This led to an increase in sales. The gross profit increased to KES 30,000 a day. I'm now able to meet my family's needs and this makes me so happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My village is currently experiencing a drought. For this reason, many people are looking to stock up on food. And because I own a shop, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to invest in my business by buying more goods. So I spent KES 54,700 on foodstuff including maize, beans, rice and sugar. When the season changes, I plan to spend some of the profit made to acquire some dairy cows that can supply my family with milk.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means investment in agriculture. I have the passion of rearing turkeys here at home and buy one cow for dairy. Currently my children get milk from the neighbor's home at a fee of Ksh.40 per litre. My children also do like turkey meat . Upon receiving this money, I will buy six turkeys at a cost of Ksh.12000, build their structure at a cost of Ksh.20000 . I will buy one dairy cow at a cost of Ksh.45000. I will use the remaining amount to add stock to my shop business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest Part of my day is in the morning. I am a Muslim by religion and I feel happy waking up early in the morning to worship my God. This act of worship brightens my day.
