How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I developed an investment goal after accomplishing what I had planned with the second transfer. This goal is to be a livestock farmer specifically goats keeping. I came to realize that goats have a ready market and can be easily converted to money and this gave me the zeal to buy more goats once I get some money so that I start the investing in them.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through GiveDirectly I was enabled to tackle things that had initially challenged me since I didn’t have money to handle them. I am very thankful for the aid that I received from GiveDirectly. Through the organization my son has secured a job of riding the motorbike to ferry people from one place to another at a fee.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I used KES 21000.00 to buy six goats. I opted for the goats because I witnessed a lot of cows dying due to the drought that affected our area to an extent that I lost the morale of keeping cows. Goats are better because they can survive drought more than cows. I also bought a motorbike on credit for KES 15000.00. This means that I will be paying for the motorbike for a while like hire purchase. This motorbike serves as a source of income to our family and my son is the one in charge of it. Thereafter I used the remaining amount in buying food and water for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I was in my house sweeping after coming back from fetching water for the household. I was with the helper when received the message on my phone. He confirmed that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt very happy for receiving such a good amount of money which would solve most of my problems.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a more satisfying life after fulfilling my desire of constructing a decent shelter for my kids. They were spending their nights in their grandmother's house where they had to walk 200metres every night after dinner. Furthermore, I was able to purchase a piece of land for farming since the one I had a low fertility rate hence poor harvest.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 to construct a decent shelter for my 4 grown-up children. They were spending their nights in their grandmother's house, something that distressed me a lot because my girls had to walk 200metres to their grandmother's house at night after dinner. In addition, I am planning to construct a nice kitchen for my family since it collapsed some time back. I was forced to cook in my house and the smoke from the firewood is unbearable. Furthermore, I purchase an acre of land for KES 20,000 this is because the place where I was farm has low fertility rate. The remaining amount I spent on purchasing enough food because of the famine in our area.
