How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I want to add another room to already my existing house. With the ever-growing numbers in my family, I want to ensure that I have plenty of room to accommodate every member of the family. By adding the extra one room there will be enough space for everyone. I also have a goal of ensuring that I purchase some chairs and tables. For the longest time, I have been struggling, when friends and other relatives come home during the December holidays to visit me. I do not have enough chairs to accommodate such people when they come to visit. I currently have only 2 chairs and a very small table
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has completely transitioned my life for the better because before my house was in a very bad state. I am now very sure that upon its completion I will have a good house and one that is presentable. I now have my seats and tables and will not have to go borrow from my neighbors once my relatives visit me. I am grateful that my life has changed for the better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my first transfer to buy a beautiful house. I was not able to finish building the house with my first transfer. When I received the second transfer, I spent KSH 18000 to buy building items that will be used to complete the roofing of the house. I bought nails, iron sheets, pieces of timber, doors, windows, and some frames. The completion of the house has currently not started because I am still waiting for the mason to finish his previous engagement so that we can start building the house. I also spent KSH 8000 to buy 2 bags of maize. The maize will be used for consumption by my family members. I also have two children who are in primary school. Their school uniforms were worn out and spent KSH 2000 buying a new pair of uniforms for each. The two also had fee arrears amounting to KSH 5000. I spent part of the transfer to clear that so that they will not be sent. This will then ensure that they continue their learning without any interruption. For the longest time, I have wanted to buy more chairs and tables in my house. I have been facing a challenge where I have to go borrow some chairs from neighbors to accommodate friends and relatives who frequently visit me in my home. I spent KSH 7000 buying a pair of the seat. I also spent KSH 4000 on the new table. The rest of the amount was used in buying household items such as utensils, washing powder, and other things.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving a notification message and confirming that indeed it was from GiveDirectly after checking my account's balance was a great feeling to me. My hope of buying a good breed of a cow was finally confirmed as this was at the top of my wish list. At that moment, I was at home with my last-born kid whom we celebrated and thanked God together for the great provision we had just received.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the presence of a cow on our field. Even though I am expecting it to start producing milk when it calves down in three months, I am glad that I can see it as an assurance that things have started changing for the better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my family of six, I had been spending a lot of money on buying milk every day from my neighbor's homes. A liter of milk daily has been straining me financially, and even though it was never enough for all my children, we have lived with that insufficiency for quite a long time. I spent KES33000 on obtaining a six months in-calf Jersey cattle that has kept my hope of soon getting enough milk both for the household use, and also surplus for sale. With the remaining amount, I had a lot to sort within the household - furniture, bedding, and utensils at KES8000, and also clothing, stationery, and also tuition fees for my five children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am blessed with a family of eight people. Four of them are at the age of six years and below meaning, they need to be fed well. Milk is one of the food products that I mostly rely on to feed them. Unfortunately, I do not own any dairy cattle and as a result, I have to buy milk from my neighbors regularly. Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy one dairy cattle for 40,000 shillings. With a proper feeding program, I project that cattle can supplement my family with ten liters of milk. Three liters will be for domestic use while the other seven I sell for 30 shillings per liter. I will be realizing a profit of 210 shillings daily.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a subsistence farmer and so I spend a chunk of my daytime carrying out farming activities. I mostly grow tomatoes, bananas, sweet potatoes, and maize. I usually plant potatoes at different times so that I have a regular harvest of them. My family depends on sweet potatoes as food. The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I harvest part of the sweet potatoes together with my kids returning from school. It is at this time that I get a chance to bond with them and share a common working platform.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life happened a year ago when I used to do the business of selling clothes during market days. The market days are usually distributed all through the week but in different centers. With the rising cost of living, I had to use part of my cash stock to cater to the basic needs of my family. I am also a widow and so I am the only one my kids depend on. It took me less than a year to run out of stock and cash. As of now, I am just a subsistence farmer toiling on my farm just to make ends meet.
