How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better house. I used to live in a small which could not host all the family comfortably. I depend on small scale farming and casual jobs in the village to earn an. The amount of money that I get through this jobs is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs. I had no extra money to buy building materials to build a spacious house. When I received the second transfer I decided to build a house. My children has a spacious house where the can do assignment without any disturbance. I no longer get stress up on where to host visitors. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on purchasing a goat and a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me. I also build a spacious extension room for visitors and children. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 2.15pm when I had just completed my day's work when I heard a message alert on my phone. Upon checking it, it was Mpesa confirmation from GiveDirectly and I was very happy because I had never received such a lump sum before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is building a semi permanent house which I had desired for the past six years but we couldn't afford. All our efforts were focused on food and school fees. I have also increased maize land from the usual four points to an acre of land which will help increase in food security and payment of school fees. I am also grateful because I have paid school fees for my kids, bought for them a mattress, and buy adequate food for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on building a single roomed Iron roofed house because the previous one I had was tiny with 12 Iron roofed house. It could only accommodate a few people at ago and my family has been grown over time. I also spent KES 15000 on school fees payment for my two sons in lower primary school. I usually depend on casual labor and merry go round monthly group contribution to pay school fees for them. I also spent KES 5000 on farming of maize on an acre and two points because I used to do casual labor in order buy farm inputs. I also spent KES 7500 on a bag of maize, food and household items. I also spent KES 3500 on a high quality mattress and KES 7600 on latest clothing fashion which are more decent as compared to the second hand clothes that we usually put on.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It means we will build a house for the family, my husband and I with our children live in this small house which is a small room for us all. It is also against our culture for parents to sleep under one roof with their older children so I think my priority is to build another house that I and my husband will live in.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the morning because My husband is still sober, during the day when he his not sober we disagree and that disturbs me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My mom was a casual labourer and used to earn sh 300 for fetching water for our neighbors in the village. we were 6siblings and I was the second born in the family, my elder sister and myself; we did not finish our studies after completing class eight, I was to join form one because we were poor. I get so embarrassed to see my friends who went to secondary successfuly doing so well in life.I feel I should go back to polytechnic college to equip my self with Mason skills so that I can be employed and improve my life too.
