How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After the time started the livestock investment, I have been getting the morale of boosting it because it gives me hope seeing how fast they increase. This is an assurance that I will not be straining to provide for my family since goats have ready markets. Based on that, I aim to add more goats if I get some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly performed a great job in my opinion by providing us with assistance in the form of cash and giving us the freedom to use the money anyway we wanted.
We were able to decide how the money would assist us as a result, and we are quite proud of what we were able to do with it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I opted to take the livestock investment way, I added five goats for $150 when I received the second transfer. Currently, I have nine goats and some are almost to procreate. This will multiply the number of goats hence making the investment reliable. I am very happy because I started small but I am now seeing the investment growth. I also paid $34 school fees for my four primary school children who had been given the notice to pay the arrears before they are sent home. Thereafter, I bought a bicycle worth $90. The aim of buying the bicycle was to aid me in fetching some water. The distance from home to the water point is very long due to water scarcity and it was inconvenient, tiresome, and time-consuming for one to go on foot. For the remaining amount, I decided to keep it for the family's upkeep because hunger had taken us in the wrong direction. Getting food for a whole week was a miracle. Since receiving the transfer, We are happy as a family because we have been accessing food throughout.

I noticed a strange message on my phone, I had to call my helper to interpret the message for me since I am illiterate. After confirming the message, he informed me that I had received the transfer. I was very happy for receiving the transfer, I rejoiced with my husband and started planning on how we could use the aid to better our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a reliable source of income for my family after starting the livestock keeping with the help of my transfer was the greatest difference in my daily life. With this activity, I have something to depend on whenever I encounter any financial challenge. Moreover, my life has now improved significantly after obtaining proper bedding. I am no longer sleeping on the floor unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Imagine sleeping on the floor with old rags as bedding, It was such a miserable life since my skin had been infected by maggots. After receiving the transfer, my priority was to acquire proper bedding. I used KES 11,000 to purchase a modern bed and mattress, nowadays enjoying my nights on a comfortable bed. In addition, I spent KES 24,500 to start livestock rearing by purchasing 7 goats. This is my future investment in the family. I will be able to sell them when they reproduce to cater to any emergency. Furthermore, I have 4 children who are still schooling so I used KES 4,000 to clear their fee arrears. I also spent KES 3000 of the remaining amount, to clear my debts at the shop where I had been taking foodstuffs on loan. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for my family of 9 members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a mother of 8 children, 7 of them are still under my care. Maintaining their welfare has been a real nightmare for me. leave alone education, just providing food for them is very challenging. The food intake is high based on how big the family is. The 3,000 KES per month income I get from charcoal burning is not enough to feed us for a whole month. To cushion my family's wellbeing, I intend to buy 10 goats at a total cost of 30,000 KES. The goats will be my future source of income, in that, whenever a need arises, I will sell a few goats and sort the necessity out.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The rainfall that we had over December gave me so much happiness. This place was so dry. The livestock was suffering. Currently, the pasture is very sufficient.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having a family of 7 children, food insecurity the current challenge I am facing. To sufficiently provide food for these children is demanding. I work as a charcoal burner and I earn approximately 3,000 KES per month. This amount only lasts us 3 weeks maximum. skipping lunch meals is the order of the day. My children's health has been detoriated due to missing out on meals.
