How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Expanding my poultry project is my next goal because it can help me sort out any arising emergencies instead of relying on my spouse for everything. To achieve this dream, I plan on investing my time and money in the ones that I already have so that they can grow in number. I will be eternally grateful for the help that elevated our lives to a higher level.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly did well in terms of message delivery to the community during the enrolment process was that they explained the process thoroughly and unquestionably captured our attention. The entire procedure was straightforward. I am grateful for the assistance that has made a significant difference in our lives. I discovered no inefficiencies because, in my opinion, everything the organization did was exceptional.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
School fee responsibility has been a difficult task for me to manage, especially since I have three children at university who rely on me for financial support every month. My husband is a teacher, and I am a farmer. We have three kids. When I received my transfer, I decided to use my entire second transfer to pay my children's school fees. This was useful because it relieved my husband's stress that month. Previously, raising money consistently was difficult because we relied on my husband to meet all of their needs. I am overjoyed that they are settled in school and can focus on their studies.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5.30 pm while preparing Sukuma Wiki veggies for dinner when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and withdrew the money three days later.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the building of a poultry house. This I had desired to build for a long time to be financially independent but couldn't afford it. This will help in household consumption and pocket money for my kids.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a mother of four, to feed my family I practice small-scale farming of maize, bananas, sukuma wiki, and cabbages. My husband also works as a headteacher and his income is used for school fees purposes. My first plan during enrollment was to venture into poultry farming. I, therefore, spent KES 20,000 on building a poultry house with a capacity of 100 chickens when my transfers arrived. This will not only be a source of income to aid school fees payment but also household consumption. Secondly, KES 18,000 was spent on six rolls of chain-link fence which has helped secure my compound. This will prevent animals like cats and dogs from straying into my poultry house. Thirdly, KES 10,000 was used for payment of accommodation fees for my two sons in different colleges. This is because their daddy normally helps with school fees payment. Lastly, KES 6,000 was spent on clothing for my family. The rest was used on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been relying on my husband for upkeep and therefore, receiving this money will relate to self-reliance. I am a housewife and my husband is a teacher in a nearby school. My ambition has been to generate income at home and cater to minor household expenditures. I aspire to start poultry farming using approximately KES 20,000 to start me off. I project that 3 months after receiving the first transfer, I will be earning some cash through the sale of eggs. This will make me busy at home and at the same time earning some money for the household. Fulfilling this ambition will be the joy of my life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I came to learn that Give Directly was coming to our village 3 weeks ago, I was filled with joy and happiness. This is because I have so many tasks to accomplish using the transfer and better our lives as a family. I will be busy at home looking after my poultry business and boredom will be something of the past.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since I am a housewife and my children are now grown-ups, I spend most of the time doing nothing at home. Therefore, boredom is the challenge I am currently facing. I have four children and all are independent. When my husband has left for school, I do the normal household chores which won't take long to accomplish. After finishing the household chores at around 10 am, I am left with more time idling at home doing nothing which brings a feeling of disgust in my life.
