How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have a pending goal that I aim to accomplish. After renovating my house, there are some areas in which I could not renovate due to a shortage of finance. Once I get some money, I will plaster the inside part of my house and also do flooring. To achieve this, I have a business of selling charcoals and through the savings, I will manage to see my goal coming to pass.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a well-thought agenda of giving cash to the locals. by doing so, it allowed the people to choose what they thought the cash would help them to improve their lives. I am not against any of the plans of the organization, I support them fully. Although I have a recommendation, if possible I request the cash program to be done annually. that is, after the two set transfers the program is to be relaunched the following year recurring.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second phase of the transfer, I opted to complete the construction of a toilet that I had started using during the first transfer. Since we are faced with water scarcity in our area, I decided to build a laver (tank) for collecting and storing water during the rainy season. The aim of the collected water is for domestic uses as well as for agriculture in irrigating my vegetables.
After that, I renovated my house by plastering the outside walls to prevent them from being washed away by rainwater when it rains. By so doing, it makes the house firmer to withstand the splashed rainwater on the walls than how it was before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 7 am I was in my house taking breakfast when I received the message alert on my phone. After checking, I was surprised to see the Mpesa message carrying my transfer. I felt very happy for receiving the transfer since I would be able to own a nice house for myself. Due to the overwhelmed happiness, I called my son who had gone to town for work to inform him about the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I currently own a proper house and am always at peace whenever I received visitors. Previously, I had to sleep on the floor whenever I received guests. In addition, I was able to construct a toilet and no longer need to go to the bush at night to relieve myself.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfer on renovating my house by putting up an iron roof and constructing an additional room. This is because the one I had was small, grass-roofed, and required constant maintenance to replace the grasses which are quite costly. I used KES 26,800 to renovate and expand it. Most of the time, I had to sleep on the floor or seek refuge from my neighbor whenever I received visitors which was very embarrassing. In addition, I used KES 15,500 to construct a toilet for my house since I was using the bushes which were very risky at night and also it pollute the environment. Similarly, the bushes are scarce due to the drought conditions in our area. Lastly, I spent KES 6000 to undergo dialysis since I am diagnosed with kidney issues that require me to go for a check-up every 2 weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My only source of income comes from charcoal burning business, where it takes one week for 3 sacks to be ready, and one sack costs around 200 shillings, it's sunny season and the business is not doing well.
I feel lonely and sad because 3 years ago I was diagnosed with male reproductive diseases, where i visited Jocham Hospital and underwent for operation.
The operation was costly but Nhif assisted me though I have a debt around 6000 KSH which is pending and I need new sessions to see the specialist, including transport and accomodation in Mombasa.
Upon receiving the first transfer, I plan to settle all my medications, so I can live and enjoy life like the rest of my peers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was happy to have undergone a successful Operation in Jocham Hospital. I feel much better in my condition.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My current difficulties are my medical condition as I can not urinate normally and I have to use pipes, I have undegone operation but I still feel I need more finances to settle my condition.
