How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I was able to practice timely farming this year. Due to this, I am optimistic of a good harvest that will last us for a longer time compared to previous years. Also, have been able to buy a heifer an asset that I never thought I would one day be able to afford it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In own opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out financial support and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 5,000 from my transfer on farmjng. I bought some quality seeds and fertilizers. Also, I spent 21,000 on beddings, food and clothes for my family. In addition, I bought two goats as an asset that I can depend on in case of emergency as it can easily be trained to cash.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was just from town and I was seated in the compound relaxing when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. I checked it and to my surprise, it was an M-Pesa message saying that we had received the lump sum transfer of 55000/= from GiveDirectly as promised. I was so happy and I celebrated on seeing this. My children could notice this and they also became very excited. We thanked God because we had never received such a huge amount of money before. I then quickly prepared myself again and I went back to town to withdraw the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives. I have been able to buy the cow that I have always desired. The cow is yet to reproduce but it is about to. When it reproduces, I will be able to get milk that my children can consume and I can sell some. The money that I will get from the milk sales, I will use on other important things such as paying for my children’s school fees. I have also been able to pay for my child’s school fees with part of the transfer. My child can now study well without his studies being interfered with when he is sent home due to the failure of paying school fees. My other children are also happy after they got new clothes for themselves. With the two bags of maize that I bought, we will be able to have something to eat for a while, and hence I will not be having worries about what my family is to eat. Having done the above, especially buying a cow and paying for my child’s school fees, I no longer have stress about where I am going to get the money to do so because they were requiring a large sum of money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This transfer from GiveDirectly has been of great help to me and my family. I was able to buy a cow that I have always desired to have. I also used part of the transfer to pay for my child’s school fees. I also bought some clothes for my children and I bought two bags of maize for our consumption. The reason why I have always wanted to have a cow of my own is that my children have been suffering because they have not been getting milk for their consumption. I have been buying milk that is only enough for us to prepare tea. I also know that having this cow will enable me to earn some income because when it calves, I will be able to get milk that I can sell and get some money. My child has too not been studying well because he has constantly been sent away from school due to the failure of paying his school fees. I have not been in a position to do the above especially to buy a cow because the little money that I get from the casual jobs that I usually do has not been enough for me to do any developments. It has only been enough for me to buy food and other household items. Thank you GiveDirectly for coming through for me in such a big way.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a dairy farmer and I sell milk in small quantities to my customers at a nearby market center. I intend to increase milk production by increasing the number of dairy cattle. Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy two cattle at a combined cost of 60,000 shillings. In this way I will have increased milk production from 5 litres to 15 litres per day. Using the selling rate of 40 shillings a litre, I will be able to increase my sales from 200 shillings to 600 shillings per day.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am dairy farmer and as such spend most of the time looking after my two cattle on the grazing fields. I do this after I am done with the usual household chores. My happiest part of the day is in the morning since this is the time I milk the cattle. The amount of milk I get determines the amount of cash I will get through sales on that day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was once married but got separated from my husband 10 years ago and left me with 5 kids to cater for. Since the time we parted ways, there is no single input or assistance that I got from him in terms of catering for the kids. He left me all alone to act as their father and mother at the same time. Life has not been easy since I do not have a sustainable source of income to rely on. Luckily enough I came back home and was welcomed by my parents as I try to fend for all of them. This for me is the biggest hardship I have ever faced in life.
