How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had no new goal. I had planned on building a better and more spacious house for my family. This is because we lived in a small house which could not host all the family well. Currently, I have a decent and spacious house and I am so grateful for the support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the people in the community to build better house and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 on purchasing building materials and building a better and more spacious house for my family. We had one house which was so small and could not host all my family members comfortably. This was so demoralizing especially when I had visitors. Currently, I have a better and more spacious house. I spent part of the money on plowing my farm and I have planted maize. For the remaining amount of money, I bought food and household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out to the maize-milling machine at around 5:00 PM when I received a confirmation from GiveDirectly through a message that I had received KES 55000. I was very excited and thankful and could not doubt it since I saw the name "Segovia" that was well explained by the officer who had visited. After picking my flour, I headed home and had to call my husband who even though was not at home, I would feel how happy he was over the phone. We agreed on the few things that I needed to buy before he comes back home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the settlement of the debts that had been slowing down my business. This has enhanced the restocking and expansion thus a better profit margin in the daily orders and sales I had been making. I thank GiveDirectly for the timely support that has brought a huge transformation within a short time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing part of the transfer that I needed to spend on the household goods, I managed to purchase a sack of maize that we are still using as foodstuff at KES 4600 and also obtained new clothing for my two children and also a pair for me at KES 5000. I also settled a debt of KES 10000 to the shop that has been supplying me with sewing materials and had to restock the other 10 rolls of woolen yarns that I am currently using in my daily sewing business. I am glad that my business is currently running so well and not in debt as used to operate before. I saved the remaining amount with an agreement to spend when my husband comes home with the project he has in mind.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been having two ambitions in life and that is owning a dairy cattle and having the capital to buy raw materials for knitting clothes. Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy one dairy cattle for KES 40,000 that is ready for milking. By employing a proper feeding program to the cattle, I project to be able to pocket KES 2000 weekly from the sale of surplus milk. This amount will comfortably assist me in buying raw materials like threads and servicing the knitting machine that I already own. I intend to use the remaining amount of the transfer to expand my house to have additional 2 rooms for storage of my work tools and my children to sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband has been a temporary truck driver for the past five years. He was finally confirmed last year September as permanent staff and we are starting to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He is now comfortable providing for us and sometimes injecting some cash into my knitting business. Glory be to God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I own a knitting machine and the biggest challenge I am currently facing is getting the raw materials to use. I live deep inside the village and the only place to source the materials is in the urban center that is 50km away which I spent almost KES 1000 to get them. As result, the marginal profit is less than expected as the cost of production is bigger hence less profit.
