How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to start planting tomatoes and onions for commercial purposes. This is because maize farming is no longer reliable due to pests and diseases. With this, I will be able to spend the money that I will get after selling them to support my spouse by paying school fees for our children on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by transforming the lives of people in my village and I did not see anything it did not do well. Those who did not have dairy cows currently have one or two, those who had single houses have been able to build more spacious ones while others have been able to send their children to school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse used to work as a casual laborer and he would be so tired at the end of the day. Also, the pay from this was not enticing and we would at times live on debts. As a way of being self-independent, we decided to buy a motorcycle worth KES 50000 using or second transfer and spent the remaining amount on food. Currently, he gets enough time to rest and the amount he usually earns is enough to cater to our daily needs. I am so happy with the recent transformation in our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday that it was around 10 am. I was at my mother's in-law house. We were just talking suddenly she heard a ringtone message from her phone. She told me to check out the message. It was message confirming that she has received the transfer from GiveDirectly. She felt so happy. I immediately went back home to check my phone too. There was no message. I waited for around five minutes then the message came confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because GiveDirectly has fulfilled the promise. I knew from that point that I I'll be able to buy a dairy cow and cut the daily cost of buying milk. Immediately I inform my family members and we all celebrated. It was really a great day for us and the whole village.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. I always buy milk from my neighbors daily and this is so costly for me. I spent KES 100 per day on milk. I depend on small scale farming, the produce that I get through this is so small and only for consumption. I had no extra surplus to sell to earn an income. I also do casual jobs in the village, The amount of money that I get through this casual jobs is so small. I was not able to save any money. Whenever I had no money my children would go without milk. This was so demoralizing and stressful. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a dairy cow. I know that in the next few months when my dairy cow reproduce I will no longer buy milk. I will save the money that I could have used on milk to meet other basic household needs. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard. I have devoted much of my time on this amazing dairy project.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will be able to get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. This will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I also purchased a goat as an investment because goats reproduce twice per year and it really helps whenever there is an emergency. I bought sofa set seats at KES 1,800.and the rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

My household don't have a cow to milk at the moment . When I receive this transfers, I will buy a heifer (280usd) and save the cost of purchasing milk (3usd) for food and clothing.I will also build a house (200usd) since I currently sleep in the kitchen with all my 3 children and the husband. My private life is intruded and the soot affects my clothes and beddings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the morning as I am alive and my family is in good health. I always look forward to a fulfilling day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of milk is my biggest hardship as I purchase on a daily basis. This is expensive for my household (3usd) on a monthly basis for it is even not enough to feed the household. My children don't get some to drink as we use all this for preparing tea .We at times prepare black and I feel this affects the health of my children as they are young.
