How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Venturing into crop farming is my goal for the upcoming year. I aim to cultivate crops as a means to generate income and provide for my family of nine. To kickstart this endeavor, I have set a target capital of $450. My strategy involves attending casual jobs to raise the necessary capital for this farming venture. I recognize the importance of laying a strong financial foundation to start the agricultural endeavor successfully. Through hard work and dedication in various casual jobs, I aim to accumulate the needed funds to invest in the crop farming business. By dedicating myself to this goal, I hope to create a sustainable source of income through crop cultivation. It is an opportunity not just to provide for my family's immediate needs but also to secure a more stable and prosperous future for all of us. With determination and perseverance, I believe this farming venture will be a significant step towards achieving that goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It is truly remarkable how receiving the transfers has transformed my life and the lives of those around me. Personally, I have been able to achieve significant milestones, such as constructing a house for my family and ensuring that we have enough food on the table. Witnessing the positive changes in my community, including the acquisition of assets, has been incredibly fulfilling. GiveDirectly's impact has been nothing short of transformative. Their approach has brought about tangible improvements, not just for individuals like me but for the entire community. The changes we have experienced have been vital in shaping a better present and laying the groundwork for a more promising future. I am grateful for the role GiveDirectly has played in changing my life for the better. Their work has been effective, and I firmly believe that they are making a lasting and positive difference in the lives of many. From my perspective, there is nothing that needs changing about their approach; it has been nothing short of life-changing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the much-needed transfers, I was resolute about utilizing them wisely to address crucial family needs. Education has always been a priority, so I allocated $200 toward school fees for my children, ensuring their continuous learning without interruption. With a family of nine, ensuring food security is paramount. Therefore, I allocated $100 to purchase essential food supplies, ensuring that all of us had nourishment on the table. Shelter is also fundamental, and I used $100 to acquire building poles, taking a step towards constructing a better home for my family. This investment was a step closer to providing a safer and more secure living space. An additional $50 was dedicated to acquiring necessary household goods. Our livelihood primarily relies on casual jobs, providing an income of $2.5, which is solely directed towards meeting our food needs. While this income has been crucial, I am elated that the transfers offered a vital boost by addressing other pressing needs, enabling us to make significant steps towards improving our living conditions.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
One of my foremost priorities is to invest in acquiring goats. These animals hold significant value in our community, not only as a source of income but also as a symbol of financial stability. By expanding my goat herd, I can ensure that I have a steady source of income, which can be a lifeline in times of financial need. Another important goal I have in mind is to fence my farm. Currently, my farm is situated near the river, which, though advantageous for irrigation, presents certain challenges. Without proper fencing, my crops are vulnerable to damage by animals like goats and other threats. Fencing will safeguard my agricultural endeavors and allow me to farm more efficiently. I won't need to be physically present every day to protect my crops, which means I can invest more time in expanding and diversifying my farming activities. It's amazing how these transfers have the potential to create a ripple effect of progress and prosperity, and I'm eagerly looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and ensure that all my ambitions for the near future are met.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It's truly heartwarming to see how the GiveDirectly transfers have positively impacted our community. The fact that people have used these funds wisely to build houses is a testament to the responsible and thoughtful way everyone has approached this opportunity. These newly constructed houses provide better living conditions and symbolizes sense of progress and stability within our community. It's a visible sign of positive change, and it's inspiring to know that everyone is actively working towards improving their lives. Moreover, the fact that no one has misused the transfers demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and trust within our community. The development of new skills in managing finances and resources is another remarkable outcome. These skills will benefit us now and in the long run as we continue to make informed decisions about our financial well-being. Overall, it's a source of pride to witness the positive transformations happening in our community, and we can look forward to a prosperous future together.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $170 of the money I received from GiveDirectly to purchase food. The ability to buy food without the constant worry of where the next meal would come from was a relief for my family. Before, I often had to go for casual work, which was physically demanding and offered irregular income. This made it challenging to keep food in our house, and we lived meal to meal. Additionally, I had accumulated a debt of $60 from borrowing food from a nearby kiosk during times when our casual jobs didn't yield enough income. The debt was a constant source of stress and anxiety, and I was eager to pay it off and regain our financial stability. I also spent $220 on iron sheets, which marked a step toward building the house I had always dreamed of. This house was not just about our family's comfort but also a symbol of gratitude and remembrance for the support we received from GiveDirectly. Our previous mud house was not suitable for our family of six children, and this opportunity allowed us to work towards a more stable and comfortable home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was winding down from my casual employment for the day when my phone rang. The sun was about to set. I quickly checked to see what sort of message it was since I was impatiently anticipating the promised transfer from GiveDirectly on that particular day. When I checked, I saw that I had gotten the initial round of GiveDirectly transfers. I ululated in delight and was pleased. I don't recall the particular song I sang that day, but I can say that I was happy and sang a happy tune.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The primary change brought about by the GiveDirectly transfer is the elimination of hunger. At first, our family went without meals for up to two days a week. I used to work sporadically at casual jobs that did not help me make ends meet since some days would go by without finding a job. We are content right now as a family since GiveDirectly has provided us with access to food.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money, the first thing to do was to buy some food because, as a result of the protracted drought, hunger was rife in our area. A bag of maize, 20 kilos of beans, and 10 kilograms of rice cost me $100. To make sure I had food security at home, I conducted this shopping. I then made a $20 payment to the shopkeeper who had given us some maize flour on credit. I spent $30 for stationery for my child, who is in elementary school, as well as the remaining amount of his school tuition. Thereafter, I purchased some kitchenware for the family out of the $50 that was left.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I live in a single-roomed house with my six children, and some of them are teenagers and need privacy. Currently, we cook and sleep in the same room such that when they want to study they have to go to their grandmother's house. Receiving this money means a decent three-roomed house for my family. I plan on using $550 to purchase iron sheets, cement, and other building materials. Then purchase enough food that can last us a month so that I can rest without going for the hard jobs. I am happy because the transfers will change the way I live and also boost my confidence.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The only thing that makes me happy is when I get a job to do so that I can feed my children. When I have money to provide my six children with two meals a day, I feel delighted. Despite the challenges that I face, I work so hard to meet their basic needs and my children are my motivation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
For the past three years, there has been a consistent drought. I have not harvested anything from my farm since 2019 forcing me to purchase food staff. I do casual jobs to make ends meet and the $ 2 I earn per day is only enough to purchase maize flour. My children sometimes fail to go to school when they do not get something to eat for a day. It pains me when I see them crying due to hunger yet I cannot do anything to put enough food on the table.
