How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I would want to go back to school for further studies. I am planning to pursue specifically a catering course. Now that I have a hotel, I believe that it will be more advantageous and easier for me in that field. Also, I trust that once I graduate, I can land a well-paying job as a hotelier or, better yet, run the hotel business professionally. This will enable me to earn good returns that will fund my children's education even as they transition to college.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in offering me money that has completely transformed my entire life. Also, considering that I was granted the freedom to utilize the cash according to my heart's desires, this stood out. Therefore, I cannot single out anything that needs their attention as they move to the other villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my recent transfer on buying a second-hand motorcycle, which cost $380. After having a long discussion with my spouse, we agreed that owning the motorcycle will be a relief to us, especially when transporting our business items, ferrying our children to school, and hauling water from the dams. Initially, I used to rent from my neighbours, which was relatively expensive. I also used the remaining amount of money to revive my hotel business, which I used to operate some time ago. Initially, I was using most of the little earnings that I was obtaining to cater for my family's basic needs. As a result, I had to close the hotel, which turned the situation even worse. My three children could go without meals, and they were sent home regularly because of the arrears, which affected their performance terribly. Therefore, after purchasing enough stock and expanding it, I am thankful because my family has never lacked any of their needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at my place of business, where I serve customers fast food. I overheard rumors from my clients that they had received money from Give Directly while I was hard at work. I joined them right away to learn more about it as I started to feel very anxious. I went to get my phone without further delay, and when I did, I was shocked to see that I had gotten a text confirming that I had received my first transfer. I ululated at the top of my lungs while jumping up and down in ecstasy. I gave my husband a phone call to share the good news. We delightedly and excitedly laughed at the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most significant difference I've observed in my life after receiving the transfers is the sharp increase in my business that came as a result of the substantial income surge. I currently have a sizable customer base, which has helped my business thrive and generate a solid profit. With the income, I am certain that I will be able to meet my family's daily demands in contrast to earlier when I battled a lot to the point of stress.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my first transfer, I was overjoyed and enthusiastic. The funds arrived just as my business was having financial difficulties. I spent $150 in total to purchase more stock for my business. I'm happy that I can now handle many customers, which has significantly increased my profit margins. I spent $100 on barbed wire to fence my homestead in addition to buying more stock for my business. Land encroachment by land fraudsters has become more common in recent months. My homestead's boundaries will be marked by fencing, preventing intruders from poaching my land. The fence is crucial for speeding up security in my compound from thieves, who still steal valuable items whenever they see nobody at home. It not only serves to demarcate my portion of land but also the fence is crucial for speeding up security in my compound from thieves, who still steal valuable items whenever they see nobody at home. Finally, I bought $300 worth of food for my family with the money I had left over. We were unable to grow food on the farm, which would have been much more cost-effective than purchasing it from a grocery store due to the dry climate in our region. I'm very appreciative of the money for enabling me to purchase enough food in bulk to feed my family of six for more than a month.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Expanding my food kiosk has been my greatest desire. With this money, I intend to spend $200 as capital for my business and this will guarantee me a high chance of a better profit. By doing this, I will have a very peaceful mind because I will be able to save for my future. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining amount to finish my house by painting and flooring some rooms. This will make my house smart and hence a better life. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My mind always thinks of expanding my business and any opportunity to raise money makes me feel delighted. Imagine receiving a lump sum grant! After hearing about the arrival of GiveDirectly in our village, my hope to have a well-performing job got awakened. I am now positive about a better future once I receive the money. Hence, I consider the arrival of GiveDirectly to be my source of joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It is 1 year now since I started my food kiosk but there have been so many financial challenges to operating it. My capital has ever been $15 and it has not increased yet, which means in a day, I only make $1 after paying my worker $1.5. Since my husband has other responsibilities, he has not gotten the opportunity to help me in this business and I find it hard to save and expand my job. Hence, the stress of operating a low-performing job is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing.
