How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since my health does not allow me to do heavy and strength-demanding jobs, I intend to open a shop business at home where I will be selling fast-moving items such as foodstuff items and other personal effects. By so doing, I will be engaging myself in a constructive light job that will enable me to have an income-generating activity, thus enabling me to do some other things that, currently I am unable to do due to a shortage of funds.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
How they made sure that everyone received equal quantities without any prejudice was one thing that caught my attention. We felt stable and could confidently plan since we knew we would get the payments in two phases. With the knowledge that the transfers were a guarantee we could settle any bills, it implied that we could even borrow money if necessary. I am appreciative of the chances they have provided for us and the improvement it has made to our neighborhood.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the second transfer was a miracle for me. By that time, my son had been involved in an accident and I was stranded on where to start with his medical expenses since I am a casual laborer. Thereafter, I spent $200 on his medication and I am happy to see him up again on his feet. I also opted to buy a bicycle for $70 for my transport to and from the construction sites because I work in the house construction industry as a casual laborer. I also renovated the roof of my house because some of the iron sheets were very old and leaking. I bought 10 pieces of iron sheets for $110 and also did some plastering to some of the mud-wall areas that had been destroyed by rainfall. Currently, I am happy that I stay in a decent house free from leakages unlike before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 4:00 PM, I was on the roof of my house doing my usual repair work when I received a message confirming the receipt of my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed and immediately received a call from my elder son, who wanted to know if I had checked my phone. We agreed to meet later that day because I had promised to start a new business to relieve him of his hard casual labor. I informed the rest of my family, who were delighted, and I informed them of my intention to collect the entire amount from a nearby shopping center.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am relieved that my son's difficult struggle is over now that I assisted him in purchasing a motorcycle for use in his new taxi business. Seeing him return home with food and money has made the biggest difference in my daily life. I am encouraging him to begin saving, which will be useful for his future projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a family of seven children, two of whom are still in school. With the scarce casual labor on which I had previously relied, providing them with a daily meal has been difficult. Receiving the first transfer was a relief not only for me, but also for my older son, who had been doing a lot of casual labor for little pay and making sure he could help us meet our daily household bills. I added $150 to his bank account because he had some savings that he used to purchase a motorcycle. He had been operating a motorcycle taxi since then, returning home every evening with at least food and saving a portion of the proceeds. I am glad he's doing well and isn't struggling with the casual labor he used to do. I also purchased iron sheets and sand to repair the roof and floor of my current residence. I had hoped to replace the grass thatch roof with iron sheets and the dusty floor with a cement floor that is easy to clean. In addition, I spent $50 on a bicycle that I had been using to get to and from work, and I am glad that it has made my movement easier and more affordable because I no longer have to pay for transportation. I also spent $30 on food during the Christmas season and used the remainder to pay secondary school fees for my two children.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
What a miracle to me to receive a grant like this! I am now so confident that, my dream will come true. I have desired to construct a decent house for myself because the one I have at the moment is grass-thatched and has some patches of iron sheets. The grasses have been destroyed by termites and I hardly sleep when it rains. With this money, I intend to spend my first transfer ($500) to offset the housing problem and this will guarantee me a peaceful life. On the other hand, I will spend the second transfer ($530) to purchase a motorbike for my son to do a taxi job. This bike will be our main source of income and my family will no longer suffer from hunger. Therefore, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It was a sigh of relief for me when my children received 10 kilograms of maize and 2 kilograms of beans from the government relief food. This food sustained us for 3 days which means I could save $24 from my job since I didn't spend it on food. I was, therefore, able to clear the fee arrears for my 2 children which enabled them to settle in class. What a moment of joy for me!
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I work as a casual laborer on construction sites, a very energy-draining job, and its income is $8 per day. Getting this job is inconsistent and this means forfeiting meals on some days. This circumstance has directly affected my family because my 2 children are forced to miss classes due to a lack of school fees. In addition, seeing my children struggling with hunger makes me feel so bad as a parent but again, I can not help them. Hence, I consider the lack of a stable source of income as my biggest challenge.
