How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am living a better life. Through the transfer, I was able to restore my dignity after constructing a decent and spacious house for the family. Previously, I was living in a small house which was not enough to accommodate both the family members and our properties. Despite it being small, it was leaking and it serves as kitchen, sitting room and bedroom at the same time. Every night my grown up children had to seek refuge from our neighbour something that lower my self-esteem. Furthermore, I was able to purchase a 2 acres of land something that have gave me a peace of mind since I no longer have dispute with our neighbour over the land issues. In addition, I was able to bought a solar panel for lighting the house as well as using it to charge my neighbours' phones at a fees. Before, I was using spotlight which did not give me much light and relatively expensive since I was require to buy 2 dry cells at KES 20 daily.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in coming up with the cash transfer program which has transformed my life for the better. Through the transfer, I was able to build a decent shelter and purchase a piece of land something that I would not have done easily without the aid. I do not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For over 5 years, I had been living and farming in communal land where I lack the right of ownership. In addition, often dispute arise over the ownership of piece of land. I have desired to purchase my piece of land to avoid the clashes with our neighbours but I lacked the finances. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 30,000 to acquire 2 acres of land for the family. Furthermore, I used KES 15000 to purchase a solar panel for lighting my house as well as using it to charge neighbours' phones at a fee of KES 20 per phone. Previously, I was using the spotlight to light my house which provides less light and was relatively costly because I had to buy dry cells every day. The remaining amount assisted me to purchase enough for the family, we have been going to bed without food due to the famine that had struck our area for a year now.

The biggest difference in my life is the fact that I was able to acquire the buildings materials for the construction of my children house. I am about to put up the roof and very soon they will be sleeping in a separate house something that will restore the privacy and dignity that I have not been enjoying for a very long time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means purchasing a pair of oxen and a plough. The motive behind this is to achieve food security which has been my desire for ages. I still use the hoe to till my land and the much I cultivate are two acres of land. This is because it is quite cumbersome hence slowing the process. In the long run I end up getting food that lasts for around 4 months, forcing me to buy for the rest of the year. Since I do not have a good income, my family suffers a lot.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest of my day when I am leaving for work. This gives me hope that I will earn some money and get food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of enough finances has been my biggest hardship all along. This is a result of an unstable source of income since I depend on charcoal burning and harvesting aloevera for a living. In a good month I can make upto 2000 shillings but the money is paid in bits because brokers buy charcoal on credit. In some cases I am forced to take goods on credit too whenever they delay the payment. This situation makes it impossible to even save any extra amount because we consume every little penny we get.
