How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My top priority is to open a cafeteria once I get some cash. I concluded that opening a restaurant is a smart idea because there are several schools close by. Based on that, I am making an effort to make sure I achieve my goal because it is a means of earning money that will enable me to support my family. To implement my proposal as quickly as feasible, I plan to borrow money from a merry-go-round where I save some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I appreciate GiveDirectly and the generosity that has been shown to us in the form of donations. I have significantly improved my daily life compared to before because of the money. I had never heard of this organization, but I'm glad I did since it's helping us get out of poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
By the time I received the second transfer, I had already pinned a plan on how I was going to spend it. I am a mother of four. Three boys and one girl. Since the boys are grown up, I thought it wise to build them a house of their own. This would ensure that my privacy space is not tampered with nor evaded. Therefore, I bought 16 pieces of iron sheets for $136 and the labor charge of the contractor was $60. Since the boys went to the forest to cut some building poles on their own it saved some money. Currently, I am happy to see that my boys are comfortable in their house unlike before when they were not free since we slept under the same roof. After that, I paid $180 in school fees for my one secondary school and the three primary school children because they had some fee arrears. I also bought three goats for $105 to serve as a future investment because goats give birth in a short period. Since hunger was a challenging factor since we have been without rain for the last three farming seasons, I used the remaining amount for the family's upkeep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at my maternal home where I had attended a funeral service. It was around 10 am when I received the message alert on my phone. I was with my helper who confirmed it and disclosed to me that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was extremely happy for receiving the transfer since we had no food in the family and my kids had not attended classes due to fee arrears for almost a week.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am a widow, raising my family of 8 members has been a big challenge for me since do not have a permanent job. Being able to provide for the basic needs of my family without much struggle is the biggest difference in life. We no longer miss food frequently like before. Additionally, my children are learning without any difficulties after clearing their fee balances with the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $100 of the recent transfers to support the education of my 4 children who are both in primary and secondary schools. In addition, I bought two goats to restart livestock rearing that I had done 2 years ago due to chronic illness. This will be a long-term investment for my children that will help them when they reproduce to further their education. Furthermore, I bought building materials that will assist in constructing a decent house for my 7 children whom we were sleeping in the same house something that is against our traditions. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family since we did not have food due to the ongoing famine and I was yet to get money from the iron quarries where I work.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been desired to have a separate structure to accommodate my family. The house that we live in has two rooms one for me and the other is for my co-wife. It has been a shame to sleep in the same room with my children but I didn't have any other option, for this reason, I wish to use the first transfer to build a three-bedroom house for my son's, daughters, and me and the second transfer to clear school arrears for my seven kids. This will restore my dignity and at the same time to improve the academic performance of my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Providing for my family is the most special thing that happens in my life. Six months ago I luckily got a rock-breaking job here in the village that assisted me to meet at least half of the basic needs of my kids. This has brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Educating my children has been a challenge since the work that I do earns ten thousand Kenya shillings in a month, which is insufficient to feed and educate seven kids. My husband passed away six years ago and the treasures that he left us with were only livestock but due to the harsh weather of the previous seasons all the treasures that he left us perished. For now, I have no one to help me to raise my kids other than depending on the breaking rocks to earn a living.
