How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We have a house that is yet to be completed and I intend to finish its construction in a few months to come when my business will have established. I am hopeful that with the profits fr the business, I will be able to purchase the materials needed for the completion. I will be glad to move into a more spacious house and for my family to enjoy a better shelter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was not biased when they were enrolling beneficiaries in our village. Every household benefited from the program and this made most of us change our lives to be better. There was nothing that was not done well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Two of my children are in private primary school and the money I received enabled me to pay KES 10000 as their school fees. I then spent KES 30000 on purchasing a stock for a retail business that I started. I had constructed the premise and I was only left with stock acquisition which I did when I received the money.
The remaining amount of KES 15000, I spent part of it on buying some clothes for my family members since they had a few. The rest, I spent on buying foodstuffs such as cooking oil, maize flour, sugar, and rice. I am glad that GiveDirectly enabled me to do all these which I couldn't afford to do at this time since I had no other money to spend

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was taking my cow for grazing, when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I thought it was a message from Safaricom company. Little did I know it was from GiveDirectly. I immediately checked it out. I could not believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money. I went back home to inform my spouse and children. They were all happy and celebrated with lots of joy. I stayed for three days and withdrew the money. We had plan with my spouse on buying some timber and build a small shop. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled us achieve our dream.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build a shop. I used to do small scale farming and my spouse does casual jobs in the town near home. This was giving us small nicome. We were not able to meet all the basic household items including paying the school fees for my children. Life was not easy though we worked hard to ensure that our children get the best. We had thought of starting a business but the problem was the capital. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and saw this dream coming true. We bought some timber and iron sheets and we were able to build a small shop near home. We bought some stock and started the business of a retail shop. Our customers are our neighbors and other villagers around. We saw our dream coming true. Currently I ran the shop and my spouse still does the cause jobs. I get some profit and I save it for household basic needs and to pay the school fees. We Intend to add more stock in the next few months and grow it to a bigger shop. We are so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened. My children are no longer being sent home like before to collect the school fees because I pay on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will start a hardware business and as such, an assured cash flow to my household. For quite some time, my husband, who is the sole breadwinner for our household, and I have aspired to start a hardware business but the KES 5000 we get from our small welding business is not sufficient to support our household as well as start the hardware business. The motivation behind starting a hardware business is that people are constantly purchasing building materials. With this, I will be assured of constant cash flow to support our family. I plan to dedicate KES 70000 to starting the hardware business and use the rest to renovate my house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The afternoon hours are the happiest part of the day. During this time I am usually done with my farming activities and household chores. I would take my time relaxing or visit my friends to share stories.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability has been my biggest challenge, it has not been easy for us to provide food and pay school fees for my children since our family income is about KES 5000 monthly. This is not enough to support our family needs and pay school fees for our children.
