How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As a small-scale farmer working half an acre of land, I primarily cultivate maize, beans, and greengrams. The proximity of my farm to a river ensures I don't face water shortages, which is a huge advantage. Currently, I dream of expanding my farming operations to 2 or 3 acres if I can secure finances. This expansion isn’t just about farming more land but building a better future for my family. With increased income from farming, I plan to improve our living conditions, starting with upgrading from our one-room house to something bigger and better. Additionally, the extra income will be crucial in covering school fees for my children. This growth will significantly improve our quality of life and provide stability for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Initially, I struggled financially and couldn't support myself or my family adequately. However, everything changed when I began receiving unconditional cash transfers from GiveDirectly. This support allowed me to plan wisely—I bought goats, invested more in farming, and managed to pay school fees. The enrollment process conducted by GiveDirectly was impressively fair and free from discrimination; everyone had an equal chance to be enrolled, and there was no fee involved, which promoted equity. Initially, many rumors and negative notions were circulating about GiveDirectly in our community. Thankfully, the organization held a Baraza meeting, which was incredibly enlightening. At the meeting, they educated us about the genuine intentions and operations of GiveDirectly. This clear communication helped dispel our doubts and fears, making me feel confident and secure about enrolling in their program. I truly hope GiveDirectly continues with this transparent and inclusive approach, as it has made a significant difference in my life and the lives of many in our community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother of five, managing on small-scale farming to support my family. My daughter, who is currently in form 3 of secondary school, has had a tough time due to frequent cold allergies. These allergies have been so severe that they often force her to come back home for treatment, severely disrupting her studies. Fortunately, she had a sponsorship at her current school however her situation has worsened. Despite my financial constraints, my daughter's well-being is my priority. So, when I received my third transfer, I decided it was time to take decisive action. I set aside the entire amount with a firm plan to transfer her to a school closer to home next term. Although I'm still searching for the right school, I feel a sense of relief knowing I'm taking steps to improve her health and educational experience. I'm hopeful about the future, even though it means she will lose her current sponsorship which is tied to her current school.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am setting my sights on a transformative project for my home: investing in a water piping system and purchasing a storage tank. The trek to the river is tedious. Currently, I rely on the kindness of neighbors having their water systems, a temporary solution that highlights the need for a more sustainable approach. Piping water to my homestead will secure a consistent water supply for my livestock, enhancing their well-being and productivity and enabling me to start kitchen gardening once I fence my land. This venture into gardening promises a dual benefit: it will provide my family with fresh produce while allowing us to be more self-sufficient. Having a reliable water source at home means freedom from the perennial water issues that have long plagued us. It's a step towards a significant improvement in our quality of life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What truly sets GiveDirectly apart for me is their approach: from enrollment to support, their process was fair and inclusive. Their officers visited every home in our village without discrimination, ensuring a transparent and equitable process. The timing of their assistance was impeccable, providing crucial support for my child's circumcision—a significant moment for us. Beyond my own family, the impact of GiveDirectly on our community has been profound. This term, children from families who previously struggled with school fees have been able to attend school, a testament to the positive effect of their work. I hope GiveDirectly continues with this remarkable mission, transforming lives and communities with their generosity and fairness.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my second transfer from GiveDirectly, I decided to invest in a sustainable future for my family. With thoughtful consideration, I purchased four goats at a total cost of $200. My choice to invest in goats was strategic; they do well in our region. In addition to livestock, I allocated $44 towards buying essential food supplies. I engage in casual jobs and rent land for farming whenever finances permit. My commitment to my family's welfare also sees me working in a school kitchen for $60 monthly. Being a mother to five children, one still in school and another who had to drop out due to financial constraints, I am constantly exploring ways to secure their education. Fundraising for school fees has become a part of our lives, as I strive to provide them with opportunities I believe they deserve. Following my separation from my husband, the responsibility of being the sole provider has only strengthened my resolve to ensure our well-being. I invested $100 in renting land for cultivation, foreseeing the potential benefits it could bring. I set aside another $100 for farming necessities such as plowing, seeds, and planting. With the remaining funds, I managed to purchase shoes for $6. I extend my deepest gratitude to GiveDirectly for the assistance provided.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a quiet afternoon when I received $200 from GiveDirectly. My daughter, a sophomore in high school, was home with me. The unexpected joy instantly filled our humble abode. In that moment, as the digital transaction notification popped up on my phone, I envisioned possibilities. With a heart brimming with gratitude, I thought of utilizing the funds wisely. The 'how' unfolded with plans to rent an acre of land for farming, to secure a better future for my family. The funds were to be split, addressing immediate needs and investing in sustainable growth. Part of the transfer would finance my son's circumcision, contribute to hospital bills, and cover the expenses for a cultural event celebrating this significant rite of passage. In that simple transaction, the trajectory of our lives pivoted towards a brighter tomorrow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since the commencement of the transfers, my life has undergone a transformative shift. The most significant change lies in my newfound ability to lease a one-acre piece of land for an entire year, engaging in farming, a venture previously deemed unattainable. The joy that accompanies this accomplishment is profound. The plot of land symbolizes not just an agricultural investment but a beacon of hope for a more sustainable and secure future. As a single mother facing unique challenges, this opportunity has eased the burden of providing for my family. Education, once a financial struggle, has become a more attainable goal. The stability afforded by the farming venture enables me to educate my children with reduced hardship. Each day, as I tend to the crops on that one-acre plot, I am reminded of the positive ripple effect the transfers have brought into our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My most recent $200 transfer from GiveDirectly became a lifeline for my family. As a single mother with three kids, the decision on how to allocate the funds was crucial. With foresight and determination, I chose to invest in our future. The entirety of the sum went towards renting a one-acre piece of land for farming. This decision held a dual purpose – ensuring a steady supply of food for my family and creating an opportunity for additional income. The investment in farming was strategic; not only did it promise sustenance for me and my three children, but the surplus would be sold to finance the education of my kids. Every seed sown became a symbol of hope for a brighter academic future. Acknowledging the significance of cultural traditions, a portion of the funds was earmarked for my son's circumcision. This covered hospital bills, provided for essential sustenance, and contributed to the celebratory cultural event marking this important rite of passage. In this thoughtful allocation of resources, my recent transfer not only addressed immediate needs but planted the seeds for a more secure and promising tomorrow for my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Due to the long drought and inconsistent rains. We depend on irrigation at the nearby river. I plan to hire an acre of land to plant maize. It will cost me approximately $250. This should give us enough maize for domestic use and sale. I will also save some money for future farming. Education is very important for the future. I plan to educate my 2 children. Will set aside the second transfer for this investment. I hope they will join colleges to learn skills and get employed and also support me. Since I love goats, I must own them. Will spend about $500 to buy 10 goats. They do well here and breed faster. It will give me an extra source of income from their sales, and more milk for domestic use.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I borrowed 3 goats from a neighbor. I take care of them, which means I can get milk for my family. It brings joy to keep them at home. I hope to one day own goats.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single parent, and raising children alone is a big burden, since accessing land for farming as a woman is difficult. We've always had food insecurity due to the long droughts experienced. This means we depend on casual jobs to get income. On a good day, one can make up to $4. This is not enough due to the high cost of living, it means sometimes we only eat 2 meals.
