How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After my O-level examination, I dropped out of school, got married, and have never gotten a chance to resume again since my husband is still in school as well. I decided to support him through and once he is done, I am hoping to also enroll in the college for a diploma course.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The past few months have been great for our village that has been marked by a lot of transformation all stems from the cash transfers we received from GiveDirectly. New houses and livestock that people have are enough evidence that GiveDirectly did a great job in our village and was welcomed by all since no one remains in the original status after receiving the money. I have no ill-feeling at all but I am thankful and wishing GiveDirecly the best as they help other villages as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My household had been dependent on livestock that on receiving the transfers was a boost as we spent a huge sum on livestock investment. I purchased two dairy cows and a calf at a total cost of KES 49000 to add to the one dairy cow that has been serving my family of six with enough milk. It was always hard whenever the only cow got sick or stop lactating since we had to get into the family savings to buy enough milk that was so expensive with the large family number. I am happy that we now have enough milk from the two as we expect the third one to calf down in the next three months. I used the remaining amount on household foodstuff and school uniforms for my four children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 9.a.m as I was getting ready to get out to my usual chores in the neighborhood. Getting notification of the transfer changed every plan I had that morning. I had to inform the farm I had been working with that I wasn't going to make it that day. I had to sit with the family, celebrate the good news as we set priorities over what should come first on the expenditure list we had. Everyone was so excited and we really thanked God for that great, and timely provision.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the transfer is the great transformation in my personal life. I had been working on casual work for such a long time but the transfer I received has proven to be changing the way things were. I am currently working on my own piece of farm, weeding the beans I planted a month ago. The instant switch from the casual labor I used to wake up to every morning to the current subsistence farming on my own farm is an amazing difference in my life. I am grateful for this opportunity to finally embark on developing my own unlike in the past when I was fully dependent on casual labor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my first transfer, I spent 35000KES on putting up a new house for the family. I had been living in a small temporary structure that was not spacious enough for my family of five. I also obtained enough foodstuff to keep my household going for some months, and with the remaining amount, I decided to change our wardrobe. My children needed new pairs of school uniforms, at least a pair of shoes each and also changing clothes every time they get home from school and over the weekend. I am grateful that the amount I received sufficed the budget I had for the household and now looking forward to the second transfer as I also have more plans with my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money is a big boost towards my dream to own a dairy cow. For the past 6 years, I have been purchasing milk from a neighbor who owns dairy cows at a cost of KES 45 per litre everyday because I have 3 young children who need milk for proper nutrition. I will therefore use the my first transfer to buy a dairy cow that costs approximately KES 30,000. The other monies will be used to build a house given that I have a small hut that serves as a kitchen and also a place to sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon after I have taken lunch and I take time to relax. On an average day, I do household chores in the morning and then weed my small farm and then prepare meals for my children at noon. It is after lunch that I get time to rest as I talk with my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finances is my biggest worry at the moment. I am a housewife who solely depends on my husband, who does not have any formal employment or a constant income stream to provide for the needs of the family when he gets casual labor such as digging in other people's farms.
