How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have a goal of starting a fishmongering business. I chose this kind of business because it has less competition since it is a handful of people who are doing it. The aim of this business is income generation because making and selling charcoals has become unreliable due to the scarcity of trees in our area. At the beginning of the next year 2023, I would like to have flagged off the business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an uplifting organization that helps people to upgrade their life situations. I can testify to this because through the organization I am living in an iron sheet roofed house which was nowhere in my dreams before. It was my prayer for the organization to reach us one day after hearing and seeing the good things which were happening in neighboring villages. I would recommend the good work be spread further past the areas GiveDirectly is at for now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
From the first transfer, I started constructing a two-room house because the one I had was very small and congested. Since I used the transfer for other things as well, I was unable to complete the construction. When I got the second one, I prioritized completing the house. I bought 24 pieces of iron sheets for $228 and the roofing timbers for $105 and the contractor's labor charge amounted to $140. As of now, the house is complete and I am happy for living in a decent, spacious, iron sheet-roofed house. In addition to this, I bought a goat for $30 and used the remaining amount for the family's upkeep

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember very well it was around 7 in the morning when I was heading to the dam with my granddaughter when I saw the message notification. I was very nervous and decided to check the contents. I was overjoyed with happiness after realizing that it was the Mpesa message that I had anxiously been waiting for. We couldn't hold our joy and even decided to return back home and spread the news to our relatives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For the past twenty years, I have been experiencing so many challenges in my household. One of them is the issue of housing which has been the major one. Being a widow of two who relied on casual jobs, it has really been a struggle all along. The previous house that I had was not only small but also in a very poor state. This forced two of my family members to be camping at our relative's house on a daily basis. Also during the rainy seasons, I had to seek shelter as well from friends otherwise I would be rained on till the rains stop. In the process of moving from one compound to the other, my properties could get damaged and some stolen. Therefore having a spacious modern house has brought the biggest difference in my daily life which still feels like a miracle to us. For now, we no longer have to worry about the insecurity issues, the rains, and even the communal discrimination.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets at KES 21600, building poles 10500, and the labor charges at KES 14000. This was purposely for the construction of a new house because the previous one was very small it could barely accommodate my family members. Therefore two of my family members had to seek shelter from relatives every night which was so hectic. It is now a relief to us all because finally, we can shelter under one roof. For the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for my family. I am so grateful that we no longer starve like before which has also boosted our immune system.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been staying with my biological mother after the death of my father. Life has not been easy given that none of us has a reliable source of income. I am planning to use KES45,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to construct a two-bedroom house for my family; one room for my mother and the other room for myself. I will later spend KES10,000 on beddings so that I can have nice sleep. I will further use KES 40,000 to help my children in educating my grandchildren whose schooling has not been consistent due to the lack of school fees. My children survive on casual jobs in the village whose pay is not enough to sustain their families. Whatever remains will be used to buy enough food for my family so that we can lead a happy life like others.
What is the happiest part of your day?
A few weeks ago, I sold 10 bags of charcoal at KES1,000 each and made a total of KES10,000. I was able to attend to my family's needs and this brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest challenge I am currently facing. The prolonged drought witnessed in my area has made it possible to harvest anything in my maize farm even after spending a lot of money tilling my 2 acre farm . Sometimes we can go a whole day without eating anything. This has affected the health of my ageing mother.
