Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Since I do not know how to read and write, my phone stays with my helper most of the time, especially at night because I dislike disturbances. One morning, my helper came to wake me up which was something unusual. Upon getting out of the house he informed me that I had received the promised GiveDirectly transfer of $550. I ululated in happiness because I thought I would never receive the transfer. This is because the villagers with whom we were registered at the same time had received their transfers about a month ago and I was left wondering what might be the problem.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The vivid difference that stood out from the transfer is the firm house. I regard it as a permanent house compared to how it was initially before GiveDirectly supported me. I am a happy parent having a good house. In addition to that, my family has good access to food unlike before when we could go up to three days a week without food. Through GiveDirectly, my family is very happy because we have not gone without food since the time we received the transfer. We are very grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I opted to renovate my house by building some pillars to make it firmer because it could not withstand the whirlwind and rainy season. Therefore, I bought some hard corals for $172 and eight bags of cement for $50. As of now, I am very happy and comfortable because the pillars were built and the house is very firm. I am confident in it. Thereafter, I paid $160 college fees for my two grandchildren so that they could be allowed to do their examinations. I did this after knowing that the policy of the college was a $0 fee balance for a student to be allowed to sit for an examination. For the remaining amount, I bought some food to sustain my family of six because relying on charcoal burning was doing harm to me since it could not allow me to make ends meet; thus my children regularly went without food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better house for me. This is because the current house I reside in with my grandchildren is old, the wall is falling off and water seeps from the roof during rainy seasons. I will use KES 30000 to renovate my house and this will create favorable living conditions for my family. I will further use KES 10000 for medication because I am suffering from hypertension for over 10 years now. The remaining amount of transfers will be invested in my grandchild's education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, my firstborn son who is living in the town with his family visited me. This brought joy to my life because he gave me KES 4000 which helps me on buying food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is health-related. I have been suffering from hypertension for over 10 years ago. This has drainage financial because the hypertensive treatment is very expensive. The condition keep on recurring because I do not complete the required dose due to lack of money. A one month dose requires KES 3000. This is a lot to me because I am currently not working. I depend on my son who is doing casual jobs in town that earns him KES 15000 per month which is not enough to cater for his family's needs as well as my needs.
