How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Looking forward to the coming year, I have ambitious plans to expand my salon business, aiming to further increase income for my family of four. To initiate this venture, I estimate a requirement of $100. This investment will contribute to the growth and sustainability of the salon business. The strategy involves saving the profits generated from the salon business to facilitate future expansions. This approach not only ensures the gradual and sustainable growth of the business but also aligns with a prudent financial strategy for long-term success. I am optimistic that, with careful planning and dedication, the salon business expansion will lead to increased prosperity for my family. The goal is not only to generate immediate income but also to create a foundation for sustained financial growth in the years to come. I look forward to the positive changes and opportunities that this venture may bring in the coming year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has truly uplifted my life. The transfers I received have been a crucial support for my family of four, providing us with essential food. More importantly, with your assistance, I was able to fulfill a long-standing dream of opening my own salon business. Without the financial support, realizing this dream would have been challenging. So far, everything is going well, and I am content with the current approach of GiveDirectly. The positive changes in my life, particularly the establishment of my salon business, are tangible results of their support. I appreciate the opportunities this assistance has provided and am optimistic about the future. I want to express my gratitude for the transformative impact of GiveDirectly on my life. The organization has made a meaningful difference, and I look forward to continued positive changes in the journey ahead.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the transfers has allowed me to make strategic decisions to improve various aspects of my life. Allocating $50 to purchase a goat is an investment in livestock, providing a potential source of income in the future. A significant portion of the funds, $283, was wisely spent on purchasing iron sheets to construct a 2-room, iron-roofed house. This decision stems from the need for better living conditions, as the current grass-thatched house is too small for my family of four. The new house not only addresses immediate housing needs but also represents a long-term improvement in our living situation. Another $15 was dedicated to boosting my salon business, contributing to its growth and sustainability. As the salon business is a primary source of income for my family, investing in its success is crucial. Addressing immediate needs, $82 was spent on maize, while $20 went towards household goods such as sugar and tea leaves. These items contribute to the overall well-being of the family. The strategic allocations made with the received transfers demonstrate a focus on improving both immediate living conditions and long-term economic prospects. I am grateful for the assistance, as it has empowered me to make positive changes in my life and for my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My objective is to grow my business, aiming for financial stability. Acquiring more machines is a crucial step as it would not only enhance efficiency but also attract a larger customer base. In addition to expanding the business, I have a plan to increase my goat herd. Part of my strategy involves using a portion of my third transfer to kickstart this initiative. By diversifying and expanding, I believe we can achieve greater financial stability and success in the long run.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What impressed me the most about GiveDirectly was their ability to empower us to achieve our dreams in a relatively short period, accomplishing things we once deemed impossible. Additionally, their guidance extended beyond financial assistance; they provided valuable insights on potential frauds and emphasized the importance of Mpesa security. The knowledge and support they offered in various aspects have left a lasting impact, and we are genuinely grateful for the comprehensive assistance provided.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving our transfer, my husband and I made a deliberate decision to invest the funds in purchasing a dairy cow. This strategic move serves dual purposes - ensuring a daily supply of milk for our consumption and providing an opportunity to sell surplus milk, thereby enhancing our income. A sum of $200 was spent for this purpose. Additionally, as a hairdresser engaged in charcoal vending as a side hustle, I recognize the importance of boosting my business. Consequently, I dedicated $39 to enhance my hairdressing and charcoal vending enterprises. Recognizing the significance of food security, $88 was utilized to procure essential foodstuffs for our family. The positive impact on our living standards within a short period brings immense happiness, marking a stark contrast to the financial constraints we faced in the past. The transformative effect of this support has created newfound opportunities for us that were previously unattainable.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon receiving my initial transfers from Give Directly, I was immensely delighted to handle such a sum of money all at once. It brought me great joy to be able to plan for something without a lot of concern over financial constraints. It was so great and fulfilling receiving funds that I can use unconditionally.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving my first ever transfer from Give Directly, my confidence has soared due to the financial responsibility bestowed upon me through the direct cash transfer to enhance my living conditions. The village has seen a substantial increase in positive engagement, with individuals now capable of having financial discussions and participating in various other constructive activities, more so than in the past.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I allocated my first transfers towards purchasing 9 iron sheets, costing roughly $96. I am formulating plans to construct a decent two-room house for my family. This new dwelling will provide us with an opportunity to relocate from our current, quite unsafe structure, which has aged significantly and offers limited space for my family. I then spent the remaining $90 on restocking our food supply, which should last approximately a month.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The house we currently live is in a bad shape. It's made of grass and small for a family of 4. We plan to build a better one at the cost of $500. A 2-roomed house can serve us well as a family. Our children will also have enough place to sleep. The drought has been persistent and also worsened by the high cost of commodities. We plan to buy food worth $120. That'll support us for between 3-4 months. It means no worry about food and our children getting healthier. We also need to invest for our future. We need to buy one more cow and 2 goats. It will cost us approximately $250. The livestock will support us well. We can sell to pay school fees or for food during difficult times. It's always wise to have livestock here, since they do well.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We are happy because of our livestock. We have 5 cows and 22 goats. They provide us with milk and we can also sell them for money to support our family. It's a joy owning livestock.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food problem has elongated due to the persistent drought. The last time we planted our farm and harvested well was in the year 2020. This has made it difficult for us. We don't have food due to low to zero productivity of our farms necessitated by the unforgiving drought. It's always a big worry on our next meal as a family. This has affected our ability to feed well my family of 4. We now depend on casual jobs which are hard to get. This has made our lives hard. We've also sold a lot of our livestock.
