How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to buy livestock , (a cow and a goat) before the end of April this year . This is because I have seen how beneficial livestock is in times of emergencies and I also want to be like my neighbours who own livestock . I just love livestock keeping . I can also sell them in future and venture into greater investments . I need approximately $300 for this and I intend to raise it fro my grocery shop .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly has done so much for our village . I can't single out one thing specifically , because everyone had the freedom of how to spend their transfer . All the new projects in this village is because of Give Directly and we are very grateful . There is nothing to improve because you did not wrong us in any way .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I own a grocery shop where I sell vegetables small tilapia and groundnuts . My husband is a casual labourer but I'm basically the bread winner of my family . When I received the second transfer , the first thing I thought of was livestock , this is because I needed a long term investment . So I bought 4 goats worth $135 . I hope that in future when they reproduce , I'll be able to sell them and pay school fees for my children . I have 3 children who are in primary school , their school uniforms were all torn , so I spent $30 to buy for them new school uniforms . Nowadays they always look forward to going to school the following day , thanks to the new uniforms ! I also cleared their school fees arrears which had accrued upto $45 . I also used $20 to buy clothes for myself because it had been long since I wore new clothes . We had no food in the house , I bought 2 bales of maize flour worth $36 and 25kgs of rice worth $30 . My grocery business was collapsing , I saw it wise to restock it with $100 . I was left with $80 which I saved incase of an emergency .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was from the market after a day's sales and was taking my time to evaluate the vegetable sales. I got a message on my phone and I thought it was a customer requesting to be supplied with vegetables. To my surprise, It was a Mpesa message, informing me that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I stopped reviewing my sales and celebrated this fortune with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfer has helped me to acquire a second-hand motorcycle which has now become the main source of income for my household. I employed someone to provide taxi services at a fee hence bringing an income daily. Through the income, I am able to buy daily food for my family and also pay fees. Apart from this, I normally sell vegetables in our weekly market and I am happy that I do not pay transport costs anymore while ferrying my items. The motorcycle has also greatly helped me in carrying water from far places since we have been hit by a serious water shortage. The bike helps otherwise I would be buying or walking to those places to carry the water.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent Ksh. 43000 of my first transfer on buying a used motorcycle that has been of great help to my household. Besides earning some income through taxi services, I am also using it to transport my vegetables to the market for sale. I was previously hiring someone and paying the transport cost. Owning my own motorcycle has relieved me of this cost, and diverted the money to other needs. After paying for the motorcycle, I spent the remaining amount on paying for my children's school fees. Apart from this, I also did some shopping for foodstuffs. I bought maize flour and as well as vegetables daily for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a mother of five, four of whom are still living with me and attending local schools while one is married. I haven't been fully economically involved in the past few years, therefore I have largely depended on my husband to take care of my family. My husband runs a food cafe in Mombasa town though the business isn't doing great. He's married to two and so due to that burden he cannot effectively take care of us. Getting this money will relieve me off the school fees burden as I plan to start livestock farming. I would like to rare goats because they're cheaper to buy compared to cattle and also cheap to maintain due to their draught resistance nature. I will first buy ten at around 30000 KES and construct a structure for them at 20000 KES. I will be very happy when I get this off the ground because thereafter I'll just be selling the animals to get school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I haven't had much of happy moments since my husband's business has been going down. But since I had of the possibility of participating in GiveDirectly's project I have been feeling really happy. This my opportunity to now make my dreams come true.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I'm struggling with a lack of income. I primarily depend on my husband to be able to take care of my family, but due to the fact that he is a polygamous man he has two families to take care of. This always interferes with his ability to deliver to that effect. I have always longed to have my own sources of income so that I can supplement what we get from him.
