How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is in expanding my livestock keeping business. I used a part of the money to buy and rear 12 sheep. I expect them to lamb at the same time. This will give me an income from the sale of the animals as they multiply quickly. This will help me in paying school fees for my children in the coming academic years. It will make things easier for me as compared to the years before I received the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The basic needs of shelter and income-generating activities were a big problem in my village but GiveDurectky did so well in addressing them. Many in my village put up the houses they needed especially for the school going children who now have reading spaces that they can make private studies in the evening. Some also bought cows that provide milk for consumption and an income from selling milk. I only wish GD would do more by giving the money in smaller bits of about 4 transfers of about $30 each. This will enable one to adjust his investments to make the best decisions with subsequent payments as compared to if one makes a mistake with the initial transfers without much room of correcting oneself.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money I received on paying school fees for my children in secondary schools. I have three children in school which would and their school fees are high cost. I was planning to sell a cow but when I got the money, I retained the cow allowing me to progress economically while my children go to school. I have had a peaceful January where else It would have been a difficult time. I then completed a house that I had started but its construction had been stalled by lack of funds. I then used part of it to expand my sheep keeping business.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to improve my sheep selling business. I chose to rear sheep since they are very reproductive and can help a lot in terms of payment of school fees now and in the future. I look forward to improving my business the more and raise the living standards of my family.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received my money. My case was a unique one considering that I received my transfer after everyone else had received theirs in the village. Message came in at around 5:00 am in the morning that day and I took it easy until I started receiving phone calls from my neighbors who were eager to know whether I had finally received my transfer. On telling them that I had received, everyone of them felt so happy to hear that I had finally received my share. The whole village was actually happy for me and I couldn't be more happier than I was then.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I used KES 30000 of all of my recent transfer to buy sheep for rearing. I have been in this sheep keeping business sometime before and it had proven to be so profitable. When I received my transfer I thought of investing my money in the same business such that I would make more profits going forward and be able to pay school fees for my children even in the future using the proceeds from the sale of sheep. One good thing about sheep is that it does not require much attention to keep them like the goats and other livestock do and they reproduce so fast. I then used KES 10000 to buy basic household needs like clothing and food for my family. This made them feel part and parcel of GiveDirectlys program as well and made them so happy. A part from keeping sheep at home, I normally do livestock selling business and I therefore invested another KES 10000 to improve this business. I am now happy that it is up and running and I am looking forward to making much more profits going forward.

What is the happiest part of your day?
My entire day entails moving from one place to another looking for sheep and goats for sale. This is a very tiresome and tasking job and because of this I am hardly at home.In the evening,I finally return home to my family. We then sit and share our evening meal while listening to stories from our young children.Having this moment with my family makes evening the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In 2012,our first born daughter was diagnosed with diabetes while she was still in primary school. Before the diagnosis,we spent a lot of money in various hospitals not knowing what it was and when it was finally known, she had to be put on constant medication. It has been seven years now and the cost of medication is always a challenge for me- it always eats up all the little profit I get from my business. We also have to ensure that she is on a good diet and this translates to spending more money on substitute foods for her. This is the biggest hardship I have faced
