How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now very different from how it would have been simply because I live in a better house a dream that would not have been achieved anytime soon. I see this as a God-given opportunity. Initially, I had plans for improving my house but the reality is I could not pull it. I did casual jobs that were only enough to meet my
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The thought alone of receiving a grant was overwhelming leave alone the actual moment when saw the first batch successful. In my opinion, I strongly believe that GD has improved the livelihoods of very many beneficiaries in the villages it has worked. When I walk across the villages I hear of the good works that GD is doing and I feel very much encouraged.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my first transfer I had started the project of building a better house for my household though I did not complete the project so upon my receiving my second transfer, I embarked on the same project to ensure that It was complete. I would love to finish this project and in case there is any money left then I will set up an investment that will be determined by how much is left after construction.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The fact that I managed to build a house has completely changed my life. I feel happy and proud of this achievement. Some years back when my spouse was still alive, he had started constructing one, unfortunately, he passed on before completing it. He left a big gap in the family considering he was our breadwinner. Being a widow it was difficult for me to handle everything. We were forced to stay in the same house which he had left has with which was very small. It has been stressing me for long because the little I was earning from the casual jobs were not enough for me to build a new house. My children used to sleep at my friend's house which was very inconveniencing. The coming of GiveDirectly into my life has transformed everything. I now have a big house which can accommodate all my children and I. I am so grateful to this organization
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by a loud bang from the door. I was shocked because it was around 3 am and I didn't expect any visitor at that hour. It was my daughter who had come to give me the good news. She always has my phone so she was the first to get the good news when Give Directly sent my first transfer into my account. I was very happy and we could not sleep anymore. I remember sitting down with her planning on how we could use the money. It was a very joyous moment for us.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a few pieces of iron sheets, building poles and timber for the purpose of building a new house. My previous house was very small and it could not accommodate us all because my family is big. I then cleared the hospital bill for my daughter who had been admitted a few days before I received the money. I was previously depressed because I did not know where I will get the money to clear the hospital bill. I am glad GiveDirectly came on time and helped me settle the bills. I spent the remaining amount of money on foodstuff which would last us up to the next season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A spacious house and buying of livestock is what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I am living in a small and congested house which at the same time I use it as a kitchen. This house is very unhealthy to me and therefore, I plan to change my livelihood through the help of GiveDirectly. I intend to construct a decent house for myself using the first transfer. The second transfer will help me to buy livestock especially goats in order to start rearing. This will transform my life for the better, a transition that I have longed for.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually spend the better part of my day burning charcoal. This work is very tiresome since it is labour intensive. In the evening, I feel relaxed since I get ample time to rest and share meals with my daughter. Therefore, I consider evening as the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Considering my marital status of being a widow, charcoal burning is what I have known ever since my husband died long ago. This work has been unhealthy to me and in most cases I have been hospitalized due to chest problems. Since I am the sole breadwinner, I am forced to engage into this activity despite of risking my life. Therefore, I consider lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest hardship.
