How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before my father passed away, he was my greatest supporter and provider. His death shifted my reliance to my brother, who was already burdened by family responsibilities. My ambition is to be independent and no longer rely on him. Given my physical condition, running a less strenuous business is the perfect idea. I'd like to set up a petrol pump in my village to sell fuel to motorcyclists because the demand is too high, which will cost around KES 50,000. In addition, once I have gathered all of the necessary building materials, I intend to begin construction on my two houses. To bring both structures to completion. I need around KES 30,000.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is doing an excellent job of providing unconditional cash transfers, particularly to those most affected by poverty. This program has had a significant impact on the lives of individuals in my village. Businesses have been revived. Because of Give Directly transfers, the majority of people now own livestock. There is nothing wrong with how the organization operates in my opinion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Born with a physical condition that made my limbs too weak to handle strenuous work, I have been depending on my brother for provision.  What he earns by burning charcoal barely covers the family's needs, including food and school fees for all nine children. The cash transfer was a huge relief from the heavy load of obligation that held him down all the time. To relieve the stress, I paid KES 30,000 for my son's high school tuition as a settlement for an overdue debt and as a precaution prepayment for the next academic term. I paid KES 19,000 for 15 iron sheets and nails. I intend to build two one-room houses for myself and my two sons. Since our house collapsed from rains two years ago, we have been sheltering under my aunt’s two room structure which feels squeezed. To help provide meals for the family, I used the remaining amount to procure food that lasted us around two months.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was around 6 am When I heard a message notification from my phone. I was in Nairobi for our group seminar. When I checked it I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I immediately called my brother back at home to confirm if he has received the transfer too. He confirmed that he had received the money. I sent some amount to my son who is at school to purchase some of the materials that he needed. The rest of the money I went to withdrew at home. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing goats is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I have always wished to start this amazing project but I did not have the money. I depend on small grocery businesses. This business earns me some money to meet my household's basic needs. I was able to save some money in the merry-go-round group that we started in our village. This was to enable me to borrow and purchase some of the building materials. Goats reproduce twice per year and this helps whenever there is an emergency. I will sell them to pay school fees for my children in various schools. I have devoted much of my time to this project. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 15,000 to purchase three goats. This is the project that I had always wished to own but I did not have the money to start. Goats reproduce faster and this has a higher rate of return compared with the projects. I spent KES 15,000 to pay the debt that I had borrowed from the group to purchase some of the materials for the building. Part of the money I spent on purchasing more Building materials to complete the construction process. For the rest of the money, I bought food and clothes and saved some amount to pay school fees for my son who is yet to join form one next month.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a house for the family. I have a family of four and we used to sleep in one-bedroom house. In 2022 late December, my house was washed away by water during the short rains season. The roof was blown away by wind and we had to spend one week sleeping under a tree until we got accommodation in my aunt's house. The rains caused pneumonia to my last born child. I will build a three bedroom house for KES 100000. This is spacious enough to accommodate my family and visitors.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first born is in secondary school at Taru. He has been performing well in class. In January 2022, he got a bursary of KES 20000 from the school. His fees balances of KES 20000 was cleared. I am now working towards clearing next terms fees balance. The bursary brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When my house fell down during the short rains season, I have been having a problem of accommodation. My family moves from one house to another seeking for a place to spend the night. This has really affected me psychological.
