How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I want to focus fully on my business. I spent the first transfer to purchase a motorcycle. I am now using the motorcycle in ferrying clients from one place to another and in turn, earn a living from that. I also want to buy a dairy cow. I want my wife to start selling milk in the market. This will again be a project that will earn us money. I also want to complete building a house that I had started a long time ago and stopped due to financial problems.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well in terms of helping the needy in society and raising the status of their life. Before receiving the money I used to work with someone’s motorcycle. This was very hard for me in that I had to budget owners cash and mine too. This was very challenging as a family would at times lack completely just to ensure that I delivered the owner's target without any fail. I am happy now that I own my motorbike and also a cow that will contribute to the income that I will be getting every day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wanted to expand my house so that we can have plenty of space. The house I am currently living in is too small. Before receiving the first transfer I had used some part of my savings to start building a two-roomed house next to the one I have. I was not able to complete it at that time due to the financial crisis I was in. when I received the second transfer I spent KSH 10000 to complete the building of the two houses. In addition to building the house, I spent KSH 33000 buying a dairy cow. Now that I have a motorbike that I use for business I saw it very wise to buy the cow so that my wife can also start selling milk in the market. This will in turn be an income-generating project for our family. I have children who depend on me for their school fees. Since they had school fee arrears totaling KSH 5000, I spent the exact amount to clear the arrears. I spent KSH 4000 to buy bag maize for my family consumption. Since we did not plant anything this year, I decided to buy the maize so that it can last us several months before I can think of buying other maize. The maize is way cheaper than the maize flour being sold in the shops. I then spent the other remaining amount in buying clothes and some household items for my family. We are heading towards the festive season and that’s why I decide to buy new clothes for my children so that they can celebrate it well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
we were at home relaxing together with my wife when I heard my phone ringing, it was 9 am, upon checking the phone I saw a Mpesa notification showing that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly, this was the best news that morning, we were all overwhelmed with joy in that we embarked on planning on how we were going to spend our transfer. I knew that I would be able to own my motorcycle with the money. I am thankful for the transfer that impacted our lives greatly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different now because I have managed to buy a second-hand motorcycle with the transfer I received from GiveDirectly, unlike before where I used to work on a rented bike, I am glad that I can make a living out of it which is reliable compared to before, I then started a goat rearing project which I am hopeful that with time I will be able to get returns out of it for my family, the house that we were living in was a family house, it was small and old but we had no choice but to live in due to unreliable sources of income I am so happy and thankful that I was able to buy a motorbike in a short period. I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a motorcycle taxi rider offering taxi services in the village when GiveDirectly promised us of the unconditional transfer, I was so happy and excited at the same time, I had great plans on how I would spend my money, initially I wanted to buy my own motorbike so that because the one that I was using was rented one, we agreed with my wife to use 40,000 in buying a second-hand motorbike, I then started a goat rearing project where I bought 2 goats worth KES 9000, lately, I used KES 2000 in preparing my farm for the next planting season, I am so happy and grateful for the support that has lifted my living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This means i will be able to buy a dairy cow. I buy milk for my family but sometimes i don't have money to buy since i depend on casual jobs. I expect to cost around 200 dollars. The cow will help us get milk for drinking and commercial if in surplus. I need to expand my house. I have one but its quite small and the family is growing. I plan to spend 200 dollars of my transfer on construction. The remaining amount i will use to feed my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I am sure i have something to feed my family. It motivates me to look for casual jobs so as to get more money to feed my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been lack of enough food. We experience drought most of the time. This has led to food shortages. When we plant any crop it withers due to lack of rainfall.
