How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, my new goal is to construct a new home on the piece of land that I bought with my transfer. This will make my life happy and more comfortable away from the persistent land conflict at my current location. For more than 10 years, I have been living with the fear that anytime conflict might arise and one of my children would be jailed because of the land ownership issues.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well for helping poor household in our village through sending cash transfer directly to our phone. In addition, the right to decide on how to spent the transfer lies in the hands of the household which was a great thing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For more than 10 years, I had wished to own a piece of land for my family. This is because we have been experiencing land conflicts with our neighbors claiming that our land belongs to him. After receiving the transfer, I spent KES 50,000 to purchase a one-acre piece of land for the family. I plan to relocate to the new area where I bought so that I could live comfortably with my family without frequent confrontation with the neighbor. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left home for the water point that very morning of receiving the transfer and I hadn’t carried my phone too. At around 9am when I returned home, some people asked me whether I had received my transfer from GiveDirectly because they had received theirs. Being illiterate, I just saw letters on the screen of my phone and inquired from one of the family members and she confirmed I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy knowing that I have already managed to solve some pending issues that were bothering me and I was unable to solve before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that I bought my own piece of land is the biggest achievement and difference that I have made in my life through this transfer. I was not happy with how the frequent quarrels were happening in my father-in-law’s plot. I was not at peace but since acquiring my plot I am a happy mother. Although I haven’t constructed a structure in my plot, I am buying time for the second transfer to construct a small structure so that my children and I can move to our new home. Thank you so much Give Directly. If it were not for you this dream of having my own home would have remained a dream for eternity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been living as an unhappy mother of 3 young children after being abandoned by my husband. He left me at my father-in-law’s home and he relocated elsewhere where he remarried. My father-in-law’s plot has been having some ownership cases which were giving me sleepless nights not knowing what to do. I wished I had the position of acquiring my own plot but I hadn’t. On the day I was told the GiveDirectly money was in my phone that was the first thing I thought of. I bought 1 acre of piece of land for KES 50,000.00. The reason as to why I took this step is that I wanted to have my own place where my children can call home and live in peace. I also bought 2 bales of maize flour and one goat with the remaining amount.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means buying a piece of land for my family. I am currently living as a squatter in another person's land. He has been disturbing my family for quit a long period of time. I want to buy two acres of land worthy Ksh. 100000. I will use the remaining amount of money to start buying building materials.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest Part of the day is in the evening. This is because as a casual labourer I go look for job over the day and in the evening I come home with food. Seeing my family enjoying the food I brought makes me to be happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am living as squatter and my husband is at Mombasa and he never comes home. The owner of the land has been sending police officer to a rest all the men and boys at the homestead. My children were one day a rested and I did not have even a single shilling to rescue them from the police station. That's the biggest hardship I faced in life.
