How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a piece of land. I do small scale farming at home and I usually sell the surplus at the market to earn an income. I am also a teacher and I teach in one of the neighborhood school. I am still on contract basis not yet employed by the teachers service commission. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I had save some money which I had plan on buying a piece of land but it was not enough. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to buy a piece of land. Currently I have a piece of land and already I have fenced it. I am planning on doing an horticulture farming. I will sell the harvest to earn an income to meet other basic household needs of the family and even save some. When the savings is enough I will buy another piece of land. I have hope that everything will work perfectly good. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all the second transfer I received from GiveDirectly to purchase a piece of land. I do small scale farming, I am a teacher by profession and I do teach in one of the neighborhood school on a contract basis. I am not yet employed by the government. I a had some some money from this jobs which I combined with the GiveDirectly transfer and bought a piece of land. I have already fenced and planning on doing some horticulture farming. This will earn me an income by selling the produce at the market. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me own a piece of land.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
With the pressure to secure a Jersey breed of cow that was being sold by my neighbor, anticipation for the transfer was really intense as the countdown was drawing nearer. On receiving it, I was really excited and had to be at his home to make sure that he could not change his mind. With that haste, I left my household with my phone, and lucky enough to make the payment that morning. I later break the news to my family members which although they could not believe it, everyone was so happy and with great hope that I had really secured the chance to buy them a cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the renewed joy and happiness I have had since I bought the two cows. Even though I am still buying milk from the neighbor's farm at the moment, I am hopeful that soon I will be selling some too. It is so fulfilling to wake up every morning with such great energy. This has been pushing me to work harder on other projects and ensuring that I make everyone feel the comfort we have slowly achieved in our household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer, we planned to spend a larger portion of it on at least three livestock. This projection never came true for me since the prices of livestock both in our village and also in the nearby market skyrocketed that I only managed to obtain two good breeds at 52,000KES. I could not afford to lose this chance of ensuring that we have a cow in our field since we needed both milk for our own consumption and also to earn us income whenever I sell milk to the neighborhood as one of them is on the verge of calving down in a month's period. I used the remaining amount on buying enough foodstuff for my household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am primary school teacher and I get a salary of 5,000, this is because I am currently not employed by our Teachers Service Commission(TSC). I live with 7 year old son in my small house. That salary alone is not dependable for my basic needs. I have an ambition of building my own house with separate rooms now that my father gave me a piece of land. When I get this money I will build a bigger house to separate the kitchen area and have a bedroom for my son so that he can learn freely when at home.
What is the happiest part of your day?
On my usual day I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, prepare my son for school and take him to school. I then rush back hone to get ready and head the opposite direction for work. I am a school teacher and I spend the rest of day teaching my students until 4 in the evening when I head back home. The happiest part if my day in the evening from 5pm when I am home with my son binding as I help him with his home work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My mother passed away last year and I was forced to move out of my parents house. In my culture if you are a single and unmarried lady with kids you should move out of your parents house when your mother goes away or passes away. I could not stay with my brothers and my child in one house and so my father was forced to give me a piece of land to live separately. The stigma that comes with such cultures is devastating and my morale and self confidence during that point was very low. My income is also very little that it barely buys food for my household. I just hope that in the coming future I will be absorbed and get contracted under the Teachers Service commission of Kenya where the pay and benefits are better.
