How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I wish to expand my project on poultry keeping. Currently, this is my main source of income since I sell eggs. Wish to purchase more hens and build a better and more spacious poultry house. This is what I intend to accomplish in the next coming years.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The enrollment was done well same case to training and most of the community members were so welcoming. Most of the people invested their money well and this improved their standard of living. I do not find anything that GiveDirecty did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 on purchasing a heifer, what prompted me to purchase a cow is that I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on small-scale farming and poultry-keeping project which earns me a small income. I was not in a position to save some money to buy a dairy cow because of the recurrent household basic needs. When it reproduces in the next few months I will get enough milk for my family and sell the surplus to earn some income. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled me to achieve my dream. The remaining amount of money I spent on food, clothes and household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11 Am I was just at home relaxing when I heard a message notification from my phone. I decided to check out who might have texted me that day. It was a message confirming that GiveDirectly has sent me the transfer. I felt so happy and informed my daughter who was at home. We all celebrated with the good news. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow because that was my priority. I went and withdraw the money the same day and started planning with my family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a heifer. This is because I always buy milk daily and it is so costly for me. I have always wanted to own a dairy cow but this was not possible because I do not have money. I have a poultry-keeping project and sometimes I sell eggs. The money that I get through this project is so small and it's only for the basic needs of the family. My sibling sometimes helps me in meeting some of these needs including paying school fees for my children. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I have a heifer and this has given me hope since I would be able to get milk when it reproduces. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. My children would get enough milk and this will be the happiest moment for me. I am so grateful for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk when it reproduces in the next few months. My children will get enough milk unlike now. I spent KES 10,000 on paying school fees for my daughter who is in the academy. She is studying well without being disturbed like before. I am so grateful and I have peace of mind to do my daily chores at home. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other household items. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better business for me. Currently I have a business of selling vegetables in the near market. My average earning is KES.300 per day, with my family of 6 children we spend this amount for buying food and other basic needs in the family. I would like to expand this business to be a grocery. This is due to the demand in the market and also to increase my profit margin. I am happy that my ambition will be unleashed through this transfers from Givedirectly. Therefore I plan to spend KES.70,000 to buy the stock and use the remaining to buy food and other basic needs like clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the past for months, I was able to start this business of selling vegetables in the market. Initially I used to depend on casual jobs within the village. This was not on a daily basis due to change of weather. From the savings that I had managed to save enabled me to start this business. We can now afford to buy food from the income. This has really brought not to us in the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
One of the main challenge is food insecurity in my home. From KES 300 per day that I earn from my business is not enough to feed my family of 6. The expansion of this business will enable me to buy food in bulk. We have been sleeping without taking a meal at some point but this business will bring a great impact to the children.
