How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We are experiencing short and delayed rains in our region. This makes vegetables and short-seasoned crops expensive. I plan to venture into this farming in the future and tap more income for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
When GiveDirectly gave us money, many households bought items they never had. Our village now has a new face, people build houses, others bought livestock and children were able to study without being sent home to fetch school fees. Many households sell their property to educate their children taking them back to poverty. I think that GiveDirectly can identify this source of poverty and find a probable solution.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Mud houses are difficult to maintain and this pushed me to renovate my house with KES 30000 for my second transfer. I saw it good to cement the floor and wooden its wall. I am happy that now it takes me a short time to clean my house. To save ourselves from the jaws of hunger and food shortage, I bought two sacks of maize for my family which will take us three months.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was at home with my helper who informed me that I had received the money. There was shortage of money in a nearby Mpesa shops and she had to travel to another destination to be able to withdraw the money. I later put the money into good use as I had planner
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the assets that I was able to buy with it. The dairy cow that I bought and the food that I also bought in bulk has seen me and my family more happy than we have ever been before we received the money. The thought that we now have some form of investment that will help us meet any emerging needs is so satisfying to note.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 10000 to buy furniture and used another KES 10000 to till a piece of land and put it under agriculture. Another KES 18000 was used to buy a dairy cow while the remainder was used to buy food. I decided to buy a cow for keeping since this is one of the main economic activities that we engage in here at my home and which will help me a great deal in making sure that we have enough money to meet any emergency needs in future. It is a good way of saving money too for such emerging needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will be a boost to the farming that I normally do. I resorted to farming years back due to my health condition and I have someone who helps me on the farm. I have land that I use for vegetable farming and the proceeds that I get from selling them are used to support my family. I plan to increase land from farming by leasing land from my neighbor with the money that I will receive.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy that for the past months, our area has received adequate rain that has sustained farming and I have been able to feed my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am facing is having enough food for my family. In as much as I do farming, maize, a staple food does not do well here and I have to buy from sellers. This is difficult for me because the amount that I earn daily can only sustain a day's meal.
