How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm also a part time bee hive farmer . I have a few bee hives and so my goal is to construct 1 super modern bee hive near our river . I ventured into bee hive keeping because very few people do it , so there is readily available market for me to sell honey and my family will also feed on some of it . I will require $700 to do this , so I hope to start saving the money I get from my 'bodaboda' business as from February . In 1 year's time , I shall have achieved this .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly did more good than bad . Infact 99% was perfect . You have helped people in my village to buy cows , pay school fees and build presentable houses . Thank you so much . But one thing that I felt you did not do right is that you did not give transfers to 2 people in our village who are living with disabilities . One has an ID and another on is a minor . You should work on your selection criteria to include such people , please .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a young family of 1 child and a wife . I operate 'bodaboda' business and I recently started a business for my wife . I'm glad that we can now support each other to buy basic needs in the house . I spent $430 on 1 cow. I hope to start milking it soon and enjoy the milk with my family , ofcourse I'll sell the excess milk and be able to buy basic needs like food . I also bought 1 calf worth $100 and later sold it , that is the money I then used to start second hand clothes business for my wife . Currently , my wife is expectant so we have put the business on hold until after she delivers .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was checking my phone message as usual little did I know there was a message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy when I saw the message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. It was one of the happiest days of my life. My family members felt so happy too. I knew I would be able to pay the debt and get peace of mind. I withdrew part of the money the same day and the rest later. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to fulfill our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is being able to repay part of the outstanding debt balance for the motorbike that I had bought on hire purchase. This was my main target since it has given me sleepless nights. When the covid 19 strike out it affected our business of motorbike taxi. I was not able to repay the installment and at the same time meet the household needs of my family. The debt accumulated over and I risked losing the motorbike since it could be taken back. When I received the transfer I was able to pay KES 43,000 and this has eased my work. I no longer get stressed about where to get the money to repay. The debt has reduced and I am planning on clearing the soon. I will own the motorbike fully When I complete the installment. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly had allowed me to invest in this business and work hard for a better tomorrow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 43,000 to repay the debt that was pending from the office where I bought the motorbike from. I purchased a motorcycle on hire purchase. I was paying KES 10,400 per month. This was so much and I was struggling to repay and at the same time meet the household needs of my family. Currently, it is much easier since I had reduced my debt. I spend the rest of the money on food and household items and I was so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly had eased my work. I no longer get worried like before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My small scale business of selling second hand clothes collapsed in the year 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. We were unable to access other stock because imports became a challenge between our borders. This ended up in us spending all the capital we had on household needs.Restarting the business has been a challenge because whatever I earn from motorcycle riding is only sufficient for daily expenses in my household.I am happy that this support has come at the right time because I will be able to restart the industry. This will reduce the burden of financial instability and joblessness which has brought frustrations in my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The birth of my daughter in the past 1 month has brought joy into my family. We got married 4 years ago but because of health problems my wife has had 4 miscarriages and this has been painful to us.This princess has therefore given us a reason to move on and enjoy our marriage.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In an attempt to curb the joblessness and also provide for my family, I took a motorcycle on hire purchase price of KES 160000 .This has frustrated me a lot because after paying an initial installment of KES 15000 I still have to pay a weekly amount of KES 25000. Getting adequate incomes to pay for household needs as well as pay this installment is now a big challenge to me. It has reached a point I would sell the motorcycle but since it cannot settle all the debt I prefer to retain it.Financial constraint is truly a huge challenge to me.
