How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to open a retail shop in my hometown. I have a feeling that this business will thrive so well because there is only one shop in my region hence it will pick so well. It will be a relief to me from the charcoal business which is not profitable besides being a seasonal one. Once I will succeed, I will be able to pay school fees for my children and fend for their basic needs like food without straining.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job by ensuring that every household was enrolled equally. Also, the fact that they supported us financially stood out. This is because we all have different needs in our homesteads. I felt it was the best idea ever and I do not see if there is anything that the organisation needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on settling a debt of KES 20000 to a friend in the nearby village. This was after purchasing a piece of land on credit earlier. I am glad that I now have peace of mind after and full ownership of the land. Also, I can now proudly construct my dream house without any fear like before. To add to that, I bought iron sheets, building poles, nails, threads and all the necessary materials to put up a new house. Initially, I used to stay at my father's compound, this was after my spouse passed on a couple of years ago and I was forced to return to my paternal home due to conflicts. I however did not have any freedom while at my parent's compound considering that I had three children, I felt like I was a burden to them. I am now a proud mother to have my own home. I also bought a mattress at KES 4000 to replace the old mats that we have been using together with my children. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my three children which took us almost three weeks..

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home with my co-wife relaxing after completing our morning chores while narrating stories to each other. I remember it was around 9 am when I received the mpesa message alert on my phone. Being illiterate, I called my son to confirm the account balances. I could not hold the joy when he revealed to me that I had received the transfer. I kneeled and thanked God for the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in daily life is that I was able to pay part of the cost of land that I had bought earlier. This has restored the confidence and trust of the landowners. I am also optimistic that I will be able to fulfill my dream of land ownership once I completely settle the landholders.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 of my recent transfer to pay part of the cost of a 6-acre piece of land that I had bought some time back on hire purchase. I was making payments of the remaining amount on an installment basis. Since then, I had not been able to complete the payment due to insufficient finances. This is because the land where I currently Inhabiting is communally owned and I lack the authority over it. Furthermore, I lost my daughter a week after receiving the aid, so I spent most of the remaining amount on her burial. I remained with KES 4000 which I used to buy sufficient food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow and I have a family of three members. We have lived as squatters for more than ten years now. I can not develop the piece of land I am living on because I do not have the rights. I will buy two acres of land at a cost of KES 100000 and build a two-bedroom house. I will now have my own home. I will also have enough piece of land to do agriculture and have enough food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son is in standard eight at Malomani primary school. He is bright and last year he got a sponsor who will pay him school fees when he joins secondary school mid this year 2022. He has the asurity of doing his secondary education without interference. The sponsorship brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am living in a one bedroom house with my two children. It lacks privacy thus after taking bath, I do change my clothes in the forest. I can not built a spacious house because I do not own the piece of land. Lack of owning my piece of land is the biggest challenge I am facing.
