How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the time of my enrollment in GD program, my children's school fees had accumulated. I therefore set a goal of paying off all the school fees arrears. As a result, they had an ample time to concentrate on their studies and this translated to an improvement in their studies. Upon achieving this goal, I developed a plan of buying of a cow purposefully for milk production. I am hopeful that such kind of investment would be of benefit to my family in the long run.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In comparison to how other NGOs work, I hold onto the opinion that GiveDirectly does well in the way it's staffs handle the recipients. Generally, GD staffs are very friendly and very dedicated in the way they carry on their work. In addition, the staffs are very patient on how they handle the recipients. In contrary, there is nothing that GiveDirevtly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
From my recent transfer, I spent 40,000 KES on buying two cows. Previously, I did not have any cow thus I was regarded among the list from my community. With the two cows, I shall be able to conveniently plough my farms. Since we had a prolonged drought that affected our crops in the previous season, I opted to spend 13,000 KES on buying food which could take us for 4 months. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for such an amazing support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That evening, I was at home finalizing on washing my clothes when I heard message ring and I told my helper to check what was it all about. Wow! It was the transfers, I was so happy that I couldn't hide my joy. I knew I was going to achieve my goals
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The greatest difference is that my husband doesn't have to spend all his days outside in the hot sun toiling to provide for the family. I don't have to spend my days worried that my kids might be send home anytime. Generally, my stress levels have reduced.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the drought season, we used to rear livestock and we would sell them occasionally to pay school fees and provide other basic needs. Last year's drought was so severe that all our livestocs died and we were left with nothing to depend on. My husband started charcoal burning to provide for the family, the highest income he would get in a month would be KES 3000, which is not enough to provide for our seven children, pay fees for five school going and cater for other family responsibilities. When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to clear fees arrears and pay this terms school fees, buy few livestocs and buy enough food to take us for a whole month. With the recent transfers, I bought a cow and a goat worth KES 18000, paid school fees of KES 26000 and bought a sack of a maize worth KES 1500. The balance is usually what I use to cater for daily need. I'm so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a house for my children. I have seven children and we are all living in the same one bedroom house which is not spacious. There is also no privacy thus my husband and I dress our clothes outside the house . I will build a two bedroom house for my children at a cost of KES 70000. I will also use KES 20000 to buy goats as investment. KES 10000 and KES 10000 will be used for food and school fees for the children respectively.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first son is in standard six. Last term he became number one in his class. He got 412 out of 500 marks. The good performance of my son brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack spacious house is the current challenge our facing. It is hard for my parents to come and visit me because I have no room to accommodate them. When my visitors come without any notice them I am forced to go seek accommodation from neighbours. This makes me feel ashamed.
