How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to save some money from the business to gather for the school fees for my daughter who will join form one next year. This is my main focus now in that I do not want to struggle next year since there will be so many school items to purchase.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Most of the people in our community have build better houses, invested in dairy keeping project and this has enable them to get enough milk for their children. The living standard has changed compared to previous days when we had not received the transfer. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 on purchasing building materials and building a better and more spacious kitchen house. We had one small grass thatched kitchen which was leaking from inside. I had always wished to build a better house and spacious kitchen but I did not have the money. I depend majorly on small-scale farming. This is majorly for consumption at home I did not have the extra money to purchase the building materials. Currently, I have a decent kitchen house and I cook comfortably unlike before when I was so worried. I spent KES 5,000 on school fees for my two children in primary school. They are now studying well without being disturbed like before. I am so happy and I hope to see better results this semester. The remaining amount of money I spent on food, clothes and household items. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7:40 am and I was outside at my compound washing the utensils when one of my neighbors came and she asked me if I had seen any message on my phone. I didn't know since my phone was in the house and I had not had a look at it since I woke up. I hence went into the house and I got the phone from where I had placed it. I checked it and indeed I had a new message. I opened it and I was so happy when I read that we had received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us. I told my husband who was still at home about it as I showed him the SMS. He was so happy too and we celebrated together giving thanks to God. We then later on sat down and we started planning on how we were going to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We now own a cow just like our neighbors. The cow is about to calve and when it does, we will no longer incur the cost of buying milk for our consumption. The children are also happy because they have new clothes to wear. It had become quite hard for us to buy them some since most of the money that we usually make from our posho mill business usually goes to the purchase of food and paying school fees for our children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy the cow because we wanted to invest the money in something that was going to help us for a long time. It was also because we didn't have a cow and hence we didn't have a source of milk for our consumption. We thus have been buying milk every day where we usually buy a liter at KES 50. It has always been our wish to have a cow of our own but we were not able to achieve this before because we had not gotten the lump sum amount that is needed to buy one. We were thus glad when we got the transfer from GiveDirectly because we finally managed to achieve our goal. We then spent KES 5000 on buying a bag of maize for our consumption and we bought clothes for our children at a total cost of another KES 5000. We saved KES 4000 that we used in paying school fees for our two children. With the remaining transfer amount of about KES 500, we spent it on buying the essential household items, that is, sugar, soap, tea leaves, etc and we bought a piece of meat to eat and celebrate that day. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for coming up with this noble program of helping the needy in society. May God bless you all.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do poultry farming and run a posho-mill. If I qualify and receive the cash transfer I will increase my poultry farming and buy maize to sell to retailers at my posho-mill. This will positively impact my family livelihood since the returns from the two mentioned economic practices will generate more income. I will be able to pay my child school fees, buy enough food and buy them new clothes. I will also consider buying a dairy cow for subsistence and sell of surplus milk to vendors to cater for any araising in-house expenditure. Initially I had two cattles but sold them to offset FUA loan.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the recent completed exams my two older children performed in their end year exams. I count it a parent's joy when a child performs in any dimension of life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My piece of land is small to the extend that I do no farming in own land. I lease a land for farming which is extremely expensive.
