How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hoping that the cows I have now will be healthy and big enough in one year, since my next financial plan is to sell them and venture into food farming with the money I will get from that sale. The plan is to plant maize, beans, sukuma wiki and other vegetables to ensure that we have enough food to sell and at home as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Instead of Give Directly considering to enrol those with mobiles only, they gave us an option of getting the phone and paying for it later with the transfer which was really good because even the most vulnerable person who could not afford it by all means was not left out, and the best part of it is, we get to own the phone even after the program ends.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the second batch of my transfers, I used ksh 28000 to buy two young bulls that I am planning to rear for about one year and sale them so that I can invest the money in farming. When I received my first transfers, I build my family a permanent house since we were all living in a small structure that was not secure at all and not spacious enough for all of us, so this time with the second transfer, we bought a few things for the house like chairs, utensils and we are completely comfortable now. I also made sure that I bought enough food and clothes that will last my family for a while as we figure out our next source of income since the transfers have come to an end.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy at my workplace mixing sand at a building site. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I realised that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with happiness because I knew that I would be able to accomplish a lot with it. I then broke the good news to my wife who was equally happy and grateful. We then embarked on planning how we would cash out the transfer and also how we would utilise our money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow with the unconditional transfer, things have been tough on my side due to low income and the raising cost of living. I am now able to save up money that I used to spend on milk daily. Additionally, I was able to stock up on enough maize. I am contented that I was able to achieve my dream in a short period, I am so grateful for the support that uplifted our lives amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I was promised the unconditional transfer, I knew that I would be able to own a cow which had been my goal for all these years. This is because I have been buying milk daily for our daily usage. I am a masonry, married and blessed with two children. The cost of buying milk daily was very expensive yet I did not have any reliable source of income. Therefore, I opted to buy a dairy cow with my initial transfer where I used KES 30,000. I then paid a debt worth KES 5000 that had accumulated for a while. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on buying foodstuffs and clothes. I am grateful and relieved that buying milk daily is now a bygone.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this amount will be a milestone to me. Currently I work as a casual laborer in house construction. The pay per day is KES 400 which is not enough to feed my family of four members. I have always thought of taking a masonery course to enable me be a specialized mason and thus I will bid jobs on my own. The course costs approximately KES 20000. If I become lucky to receive the transfer I will consider buying dairy cows with the balance. I am much overwhelmed by the initiative from Give Directly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last two weeks, I had a visit to Trans Mara in Narok County and I was much happy to see nice breeds of sheep, goats and cattle. This gave me a challenge and energy to push and workhard towards emulating the practice of animal keeping. I am happy because if I receive the transfer, I will prioritize buying such domestic animals.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I buy maize and all other kitchen needs for my family. My family sometimes have to forgo some meals because I am not in a position to fully provide for them. For the last one week I got no onstruction job and this is affecting me and my family in terms of daily provisions. I am much worried because I forsee people not starting on construction due to the current economic hardships in Kenya.
