How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year and beyond, my desire is to buy an additional piece of land. Having managed to buy at least half an acre to date, I feel I can do more and be in a position to buy extra piece of land. This will allow me diversify a lot in terms of farming and make extra income in the long run. Having had all of my children successfully complete their secondary level education, my desire is to now see that I divert all the energies towards making this goal a reality. Once this is done, I will be able to advance my agricultural practices and generally improve my life and that of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by giving support in form of cash. Looking at the things that I have been able to achieve makes me very happy and content. I would not have for example been able to buy some piece of land had I not been given the freedom to choose how to spend the money. I look forward to achieving even much more after the motivation drawn from the things I was able to do after receiving this transfer. I did not find anything with GiveDirectly that I thought could have been done in any better way than it was done. Everything went well with all their operations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer of $550, I used $450 to buy a piece of land. I had managed to save some amount from the first transfer and I also had other savings from a savings plan that I joined within the village. I combined all the money that I got from the merry go round contribution and the second transfer and bought the piece of land. I made a decision to buy a piece of land since we have been staying in a very small piece of land that I bought with my own money in the recent past. My desire was to get some extra money and expand the said piece of land and be able to advance my agricultural activities such as poultry keeping and even dairy keeping. I normally run a small business that would not allow me to do such mega investments since the amount of money that I make from the said business would provide me with just enough to feed my family and probably pay school fees for one of my children who just concluded her secondary school studies. I then used an amount that I was left with of almost $100 to clear school fees for one of my children who has just concluded her secondary school studies. I am looking forward to making more money and being in a position to buy an extra piece of land too.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4 pm when I heard a message notification from my phone. I was still at work, I ran a grocery business at the shopping center. I decided to check out who could have texted me that evening, Little did I know it was a message from GiveDirectly. I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I informed my daughter who called me and she was so happy. I knew I would be able to pay her the school fees and purchase some household items. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has improved our living standard to be much better than before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
paying school fees for my daughter who is in college is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I used to struggle so much to raise the school fees. I depend on small-scale businesses for groceries. I would save this money on the merry-go-round groups that we have started in our village. It was not enough and my daughter would be so stressed since she could miss her classes. This was her final year and I am so grateful I have paid on time. Currently, he is studying well without being disturbed like before. I have peace of mind to conduct my business and even save more in the money go round. GiveDirectly has changed and improved our living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on school fees for my daughter who is in her final year in college. This was my biggest challenge and worry at that time. She was so happy and she has a humble time studying for her final exams. The money that I would get from the small business that I have was so small and I was not in a position to pay the school fees at once. I spent KES 3,000 to pay her hostel rent. I save KES 20,000 planning on topping up with the second transfer to purchase a piece of land. I have a small land and I have not been in a position to do some farming. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live on 0.2 acres of land with my three children and four grandchildren. Engaging in agriculture which is the main economic activity in this area is a challenge to me.As a result I depend on purchased food resources which is sometimes expensive to me because I earn an average amount of KES 300 daily from vending vegetables.I am happy with KES 80,000 from this transfers I will achieve my dream of owning an additional 0.2 acres of land. This land will enhance food security as well as reduce expenses in this household because I will be able to plant and consume yields from my farm.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter who is a mother of two joined Polytechnic in the last two years. At the moment she is in her final year and doing well in her studies. Her progress in school and my ability to fully pay her school fees amounting to KES 150000 has made me happy. This is because I foresee a sigh of relief in terms of finances in the future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single mother of 4 taking care of 4 grandchildren whose mothers went back to school.I am greatly stressed by the burden of providing for all these 8 members.Being a vegetable vendor earning KES 300 daily I am unable to satisfy my family's needs fully. School fees payment for instance has become a great challenge to a point that two of my children have dropped out of school.
