How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I get money, I aim to invest in my children's education because investing in their education is constructing a strong pillar for their lives. I am a father of three children, two of them are in primary school while the third one has not been enrolled yet. From my livestock investment, I believe I will make it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly transformed our lives through unconditional transfers. Through this money, every villager who managed to get did things that could positively change their living conditions. Everyone is happy with the organization and if I could be asked, I would recommend the organization to come back for the third and fourth time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I desired to invest in livestock because they are safe to look after and can be converted to monetary value if the need arises. Therefore, when I withdrew the money, I bought twelve goats for KES 21000.00. Thereafter, I renovated my house because the poles were damaged by termites. Therefore, I bought some cement and hard corals to construct a base all around the house and some pillars to make the house firm. The renovation took around KES 20000.00. For the remaining amount, I bought some clothes and food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home with my spouse preparing for my daily activities of looking after my livestock. I remember it was exactly 7 am when I checked my mobile phone and saw the message carrying the transfer. We felt extremely happy with my wife for receiving our transfer. We were very sure that we would be able to accomplish the projects that we had in mind awaiting the money which was promised by the GiveDirectly officer during the enrollment stages. Because we had already planned, we withdraw the transfer on the same day to execute our plans.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to boost my livestock rearing with the help of the transfer is the biggest difference in my daily life. With the transfer, I was able to purchase 5 goats and 3 sheep. Previously, I had fewer animals and most of them were for my brother. In addition, I was able to improve poultry farming by making a big cage and buying 150 chicks. I am confident that I will be able to get enough profit once I sell them when they mature. I will use the income to solve most of my financial problems. I am very thankful for the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 3800 to purchase a new mattress, this is because we were using an old and torn one which was not comfortable as we were always feeling body pains after every morning. I spent KES 11,000 to expand my poultry farming by constructing a big poultry cage that can comfortably accommodate 300 chicks. Similarly, I purchased 150 chicks for KES 3000 for a start. Previously, I was practicing Poultry farming on a small scale which was not profitable enough. I am optimistic that I was able to get enough income to support the essential needs like food. In addition, I bought 5 goats and 3 sheep for KES 15,000 in total. This was to boost my livestock rearing an activity that I had been relying on for more than two years now. With the remaining amount, I bought clothes for every family member and enough food stock since we are undergoing food scarcities in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream has always been to start a business of keeping chickens on a large scale but first I would love to build a permanent house where I can start a family since I got married 6 months ago and my current house is very small to grow a family in. Part of these transfers will help in providing good medication for my mother who got an accident and dislocated her leg, she is required to continuously go for physiotherapy. Her medical expenses are costly and my brothers' strain a lot in providing for her that's why I would love to chip in when I receive this money. Receiving this money means a change in my life and that of my extended family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Getting married is the best thing that has happened to me in the past six months because I have got someone to start a family with and also help me to take care of my ailing mother.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My current challenge is a lack of money to take care of my family's needs especially my mother who needs constant visitation to the hospital for physiotherapy since she got an accident that left her disabled. The high rate of unemployment has contributed to this because everywhere I go in search of a job I cannot find one. The casual jobs that I depend on are also not enough for my family because I only make 250 KES daily.
