How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So much has changed, I now have rented a farming land. I am confident that my yield will increase because I have a piece of land and I have also bought fertilizer. I also managed to buy clothes and now I look nice. I am also able to live an independent using the money I earn from my small business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GD reached out to me at the right time when I needed help. I have lived in this village for so long but no NGO has enrolled such a large number of recipients. GD has shown love to us by enrolling almost everyone in this village. The amount of money we are receiving is also more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My focus was on improving the roof of my house. I thought it wise that my house should have an iron roof. The grass thatched roof was giving me problems in rainy season because it was leaking. I bought timber, wires used to tie the timber and nails. I used part of the money to pay a carpenter. I also bought a bag of fertilizer in readiness of the next growing season. I also don't own a farming land and is used the money to rent a piece of land. I have also started a small business of selling vegetables. I have saved part of my transfer to use it on my day to day needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money will go a long way in reducing poverty in my household. We depend on our small garden as a main source of food which is never enough and sometimes my husband goes to do a bicycle taxi business. When we receive the money, I am going to consult with my husband on how we should spend the money as we have many problems. However the main priority will be to secure enough bags of maize so as to have enough food for the coming winter when maize prices are up. The other money will go towards having an iron sheet roofed house and also buy some livestock to rear and sell them in future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is always in the evening. I have enough time to attend to my children and am always happy to see them home. Being near a lake is sometimes a cause for concern to little children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is always lack of enough food. This is so as we do not harvest enough to last us till the next farming season. This means we always have hunger in our household for most period of the year. This affects how we do other chores or our decisions to invest in any business as the priority is always to have food for the day.
