How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to own a reliable source of income for myself. I am aiming at investing $200 to start a grocery business where I will be selling tomatoes, cabbages, bananas and potatoes. This will supplement my earnings from the small food outlet where I sell tea and doughnuts. Once I accomplish this, I would be able to enable to earn $5 per day which will be able to fully support the needs of our family of 10 members especially the education of the 9 children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in conducting meetings in the village and giving us information about mobile money which helped us a lot. Through the training, we were able to protect the transfers that prevent loss through fraudsters. I do not see anything that it does not do well. I wish it continues assisting poor people in society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer was of great help to me, I spent $240 to clear the second term fee arrears for my 4th born child who is in a national secondary school. Currently, I am happy that my kid is learning without any interruption. In addition, I used $180 to purchase a solar lighting system for our house. Previously, we were using paraffin lumps which did not provide enough light. Similarly, it requires purchasing paraffin every day which is costly. This was making my kids late to school every morning since it could end before 5am in the morning when they were required to start preparing for school since they are located a long distance. Furthermore, I bought proper modern bedding for $115 for myself, I was using mats and a traditional treads twisted bed which was not comfortable because I always felt body pains every morning.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 in the morning when I was on my to town when I heard the loud vibration from my cellphone. Since I could not comprehend the message, I asked my son who had accompanied me to check the content of the messages. Upon checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and felt like I was in a dream. We even decided to go back home and start the planning as early as possible.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now an entrepreneur. Currently, I am operating the vegetable business in my village and I am so glad that the business has picked up so well. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I used to be a housewife and my spouse has been the breadwinner for all those years. Being in a polygamous marriage has never been easy at all. On most days, all my children would starve and above all be forced to stay at home while the others are in school. This was because of the huge fee balances has been accumulating every semester. I worried that they might even drop out of school since my spouse's low salary could not cater to all the responsibilities of the two households. I am now a happy mother that the business that I currently started is doing so well with positive returns. I am currently capable of taking good care of my children without the support from their father. This is the greatest dream and goal that I had been desiring to achieve.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30000 of my first transfer on clearing the fees for my son who recently joined secondary school. Additionally, I bought new uniforms, stationery, and sorts of the items needed for him to be comfortable in school. The transfer came at a good time because I was stuck, I had tried to seek some scholarship from the government and well-wishers but it was in vain. I was worried that my son would be forced to stay at home while his friends are in school. Also, I started a business selling vegetables like tomatoes, kales, cabbages, and even foodstuff. I am glad that for now, I have a reliable source of income that I can proudly talk of. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my nine children and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was operating a small grocery but it is no longer operational because it was the only source of income. we depended on it for our basic needs. My husband is old, he can not provide for the family. I am planning to start a small Retail shop plus Grocery which will serve as a source of income generation. I am planning to spend the first transfer of 55000 KES to rent a shop, buy commodities and some groceries. I am excited to see this happen.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My two children who just completed their primary level performed well in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education. I am proud of them even though I do not have money for offsetting them to secondary school. My wish is to see them get a good education and live a decent life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a huge burden of paying school fees for my four children. I have a fee balance of 10000 KES for my son in form two and three others in primary school. They have been sent home several times to look for school fees. I don't have a stable source of income, I am a casual labourer. I only pocket 200 KES in a day which I spend only on food. I have two children yet to join form one. I do not have the means of starting them off. I feel stressed when I can not support my children with their basic needs.
