How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With my first transfers, I managed to buy eight goats because I wanted to do goat keeping as my main economic activity. Next year, I am looking forward to buy more goats and accomplishing this means that I will be able sell these goats in future when they will have multiplied and hence take care of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What impressed me with Givedirectly is their independence. They were not dependent on anyone on data when they were doing enrollment and I this shows how transparent their systems are. The field officers did not take bribe from anyone and they served us very well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Early this year, I got married to the love of my life and due to financial constrains, I was not able to pay dowry as required by the customary law. Being enrolled in the program was the best thing to ever happen to me because this was a perfect time when I needed the finances the most I spend $250 to buy a cow that that I presented as dowry with the transfer balance. Although I was not able to clear the dowry, I am looking forward to clear it by the end of next year.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6:20 pm I was just relaxing at home when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. That was the highest amount of money I have ever received in my entire life. I felt so happy and grateful. I informed my family members and everyone was so grateful. This was our chance to invest in the things that we planned. We planned with my family and I withdraw the money after two days. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled us to fulfill our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been in a position to invest in livestock. This had always been my dream it I did not have the money to invest. Majorly we plant maize and vegetables in our area. The produce that we get is for consumption. We rarely get the surplus to sell so that we can earn some income. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and grateful because I was in a position to fulfilled my dream. I have an ox. I plan to sell after a period of one year at a higher price. I will use the proceed to purchase a dairy cow. My family will get enough milk unlike now. The goats rearing project is also one of the best investments since goats reproduce twice per year and have a higher rate of return. I am so grateful because I have invested the transfer on this project. I will sell them when they reproduce in the future and used the money on purchasing dairy cows. I intend to majorly invest in the dairy keeping project. This is mainly to be my source of income apart from other casual jobs that I usually do. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time to happen.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 13,000 on purchasing an ox. This is one of the investments that I had planned with my family. I plan to sell after one year at a higher price to purchase a dairy cow. I spent KES 40,000 on purchasing eight goats. This is because goats reproduce faster and helps during an emergency. Goats rearing does not require much attention. I will do my daily activities without being stressed. I will sell them in the future to get the best dairy cows. This will enable me to get enough milk for the family. For the remaining amount of money, I purchased hens. Poultry keeping is also good since it gives some income through the sales of eggs. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly had enabled me to invest in livestock which has always been my dream.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently I am not married and receiving this money will really boost as I plan myself to get married and be a family man. I live a favorable environment for animal keeping and as per now I own 3 sheep. The others which I look after belong to my father. I could like to add the number because I that is the only way for survival. I am an holder of diploma in business management and I have never been in any formal employment. I am very much happy with GiveDirectly's help because I have heard success stories of past recipients.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My joy and happiness is traced back to two months ago where my father's 2 goats gave birth to their young ones. It is my happiness because I am certain that through such I will get a lot of inheritance benefits from my father. I am much grateful for the responsibilities assigned to me and that is mainly to be in the look out of my father's assets.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Loneliness is currently affecting me. I live alone in my household and daily chores are so many. If I could have married my daily household chores burden could be less. Secondly I have been trying to do poultry farming but in a month ago all my chicken were eaten by a wild animal. I am disappointed with such happenings because the activity was really picking.
