How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is currently different from how it was in that I have become independent. My income has increased because I left selling water and started a new business of selling pudding. I have been able to get more income as compared to before hence able to take care of my needs easily. Nowadays I don't take loans from my friends like I used to do.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to stabilize my business. I want to save more money and make sure that the business premises is extended where more customers can find places to sit when eating and I will also start preparing different types of pudding.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on paying rent for nine months. I felt that once I sought out the rent issue I can now focus on other things. Without rent, one cannot focus or grow on whatever they are doing. I had been selling drinking water which didn't have much profit. This made it difficult to pay rent. I used to have issues with my landlord because of the late payments. I feel relieved and focused after paying the rent. I also managed to buy clothes and shoes. Apart from that, I spent part of it to start a business. I had no job. I used to depend on hawking water. Nowadays I sell pudding and I normally get a good amount of money at the end of the day. I can easily meet my needs as a result of this.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different in that, I now depend on myself. I no longer have to depend on other people or borrow debts to settle my bills. I have an income from my business that sustains me.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal is to expand my mango business to a point where I can supply mangoes in sacks, here in Mathare, or even at a large market in Nairobi county.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to start a fruit business in Mashimoni village in Mathare valley, where I live. I sell Mangoes only for now, since Mangoes are currently in high season and they sell a lot especially in this hot sun. My business is only one month old and doing well so far. I used to depend on casual jobs which I have been engaged in for the past four years. I went through a lot of challenges and struggles with this engagement as these jobs could be rare at times and I would find myself with no money for food or rent at the end of the month. With my business, I am always assured of some income at the end of the day. My business has sustained me for the past one month whereby I can now afford my daily basic basic needs including paying my rent.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I will use my next transfer to rent a permanent structure to sell these items. I plan to bring in more stock which will be hard to carry home every evening, that is why I need to find a more secure place which is very hard to find in this area is usually very expensive.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before I received money from GD, I was involved in many criminal activities such as attacking people at night in the estate or stealing electric wires from people's homes for sale in order to make money. This was very dangerous as we were constantly being hunted by the police who were ready to shoot us if caught. The wires that we stole also put our lives at risk because electrocution is always a possibility in such cases. I am glad to report that I have left all these behind and now fully concentrate on my business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of the money I received to open a boutique which has always been my dream which I could not achieve due to lack of finances.I have been jobless for a very long time which forced me to do construction jobs and engage in shady deals whenever I failed to get any. I used the remaining amount to pay my rent and buy foodstuff.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
My phone had gone off the previous night and I when to charge it at one of the construction sites I went to that particular day. When I turned it on at around 9 am, I received two messages indicating that I had received money from GD. I abandoned what I was doing at that moment and went back home because I could nolonger concentrate on the job anymore.
