How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to start a grocery business by the end of February this year, I will be sourcing the vegetables from Samburu. I'll need a capital of $120 which I intend to raise from selling my goats. I have settled on a business because it will generate income quickly since there is ready market for vegetables in my village. I'm sure if this business stabilises, It will help me to pay school fees for my children and also buy food for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is the best organisation so far. You have really uplifted our livelihoods. Everyone has used your money in a productive way. On my side, I'm grateful that you enabled me to buy goats, this is something I may have never achieved in a life time. Thanks to Give Directly, I'll be able to sell my goats and start a business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I sell charcoal, and this is our main source of income which is still unstable. I had always wished to own cattle like my neighbours, so when I received the second transfer, I went straight to the market the following day and bought 5 goats worth $140. I chose goats because they can come in handy in times of emergencies like school fees. My son who is in class 8 was almost falling into depression because he had stayed at home for 3 weeks without going to school because he had arrears of $250, I cleared it and I'm he is back to his jovial state since he attends school daily. I'm so grateful to Give Directly, had you not come in, my charcoal business would have taken forever to raise this school fees balance. I also used $24 to buy new school uniforms for my 4 children who are in primary school, there old uniforms were already torn. We also had no food in the house, we were used to feeding from hand to mouth, but when I received the second transfer, I spend $100 on 4 bags of maize which has sustained us for almost 4months. Now I have a taste of the heavenly food security feeling! I used the remaining $16 to buy a 'leso' for myself and vegetables. Thank you so much Give Directly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was alone in the farm looking after the animals, wondering on which steps to take so as to get money for my family's needs.I had no source of income and previously had been looking for sources of income but nothing good was forthcoming.Receiving transfers made me so happy and had to rush home immediately to share the good news with the rest of my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer seek for shelter from a friend's place during heavy rains, having built a modern house has restored my inner peace as I do not get worried to shift my valuable household items during rainy season, it was a very tiresome task being that some items like a bed and wall unit were so heavy to move from one point to the other.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the transfers to build a house, I had a grass thatched house which was not in good condition and could collapse any time, during heavy rains I used to seek for shelter at a friend's place, I used Kshs 25,000 to build a two bedroom house. I do subsistence farming for a living, I used Kshs 30,000 to buy two cows for cultivating. I used to do it by myself since I had no money to hire labour, with the cows on board, it will take the shortest time possible to plough a piece of land.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live under a grass thatched house that is in a pathetic condition. The walls have got multiple cracks and this is risky especially during the rainy seasons where the loose walls fall and I have to repair again. Moreover, my house lacks a door meaning snakes can easily get inside. I am planning to use KES 80,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to construct a two-bedroom semi permanent house for my family of nine. With two rooms, I am assured of my privacy given that my children will have their own separate room. I will use the balance to buy 8 goats for domestic rearing. Given that my children are in primary school, the goats will help in catering for their education once they get to secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last season, we managed to harvest five 90kgs bags of maize from our farm. The food sustained us for two months and this brought joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenges I am currently facing is lack of a descent shelter for my family of nine and lack of a sustainable source of income to sustain my family. Every single day under my roof is risky because of the multiple cracks on the walls. This has made it impossible to sleep in peace. Moreover, life has been miserable because I do not have any reliable source of income to assure my family a decent life. The peanuts we get from charcoal burning are not enough to help my family.
