What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My aspirations has been to educate my children and help them realize their dreams in future. Since I have been unable to raise the needed school fees for my children's education expenses due to prolonged periods of drought, I have been unable to have sufficient milk for sale and raise cash for school fees. My plan therefore, is to clear the school fees arrears of KES 3500 of one of my children for this year using the first transfer and remaining cash will be used in paying next year's school fees. My two school going children will have uninterrupted learning and I am happy too as a caring parent.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last 3 months, I was able to harvest sufficient millet in one of my farms and this has lessen the burden on spending a lot of cash in buying it. Owing to the fact that I am diabetic, I was advised to use millet because it is a remedy in reducing my condition. Due to this, I am now living a life full of contentment and hopes of improved living standards.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Prolonged period of drought is the biggest hurdle we are currently facing. I am a livestock farmer and it is our major source of livelihood yet we receive minimal rainfall in our region. Animal feeds has become scarce and moreover, this has brought about the ripple effect and getting school fees and cash for domestic use is now an uphill task. I, therefore, intend to spend my first transfer on clearing school fees arrears and do away with the fears that has built in my life. This is the corner stone in realizing a fulfilled life as a parent and I am glad that I will be among the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly.
