How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The greatest difference in my life is that I was able to clear school fees arrears for my child with the money which I had received as my second transfers. At the time when Give directly came, I was wondering how I would manage to pay his school fees as he had been frequently sent home for school fees which I couldn't afford to raise. Apart from Paying school fees I also spent part of the transfers on purchasing building materials for constructing a better and more spacious house. I am happy now we got a better house which can accommodate us well with my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the fact that the grant issued by Give Directly is unconditional makes it so unique. One can use the money how best they feel without restrictions and again as I have said it is a grant hence you owe no one. Saying GD has done well will be an understatement. If I were a donor then I would replicate what GD has done to our community with confidence.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfers to purchase livestock and purchase building materials. This has been of great help to my household. I had longed to be like other people who owned livestock and stayed in bricked houses with iron roofs but I couldn't because I did not have the capability. But GD made me realize my dream at a time that I had lost hope.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The transfer enabled me to purchase some goats that I am currently keeping in my homestead. To me having these goats is like a saving because once they reproduce and increase in number, at least I can now depend on them in case of a financial need unlike before when I owned nothing, which makes it be the biggest difference in my daily life. Furthermore, my children are still young thus these goats will help raise enough money for their education, thus they won't be struggling in reaching to a higher level which has been the major expectation that I have for them as a parent.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer notification early in the morning when I was checking my inbox. On checking, I was greatly amused to see an Mpesa message. When I read the contents, I felt happy because GiveDirectcly had honoured their promise to us by sending me KES 55000. I thanked them for this fortune.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 15000 on the transfer to purchase six goats. I am rearing these goats so that I can sell the offsprings soon to raise more money for my children's education as well as meeting other financial needs. In addition to this, I also saved KES 10000 that I am planning to pay for my children school fees. This will enable them to remain in school and avoid further interruptions in their studies. Apart from this, I also took KES 4000 to hire the services of oxen to plough my farm for timely cultivation. I also paid a deposit of KES 2500 for a solar lantern that is currently providing lighting in my household as well as charging my phone. I am no longer spending daily on kerosene. I spent KES 3000 on buying a new door and fixed it at my house since the old one was broken. I am spending the remaining amount to meet the family basic needs such as clothing and daily foodstuffs as well as paying for other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to meet my family's needs with ease. I plan to spend 30000 shillings on my children's school fees and purchase two beds and mattresses so we can sleep comfortably and wake up energized. I will also purchase some 10 indigenous goats at a total cost of 30000 so I can be able to meet future financial requirements.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the best part of my day because I get to rest after working all day cutting and collecting trunks to burn charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial limitations have been a big frustration in our lives. In a month I need roughly 12000 to meet my family's needs such as food, school fees etc. From my charcoal making business, I only make about 4000 a month and this leaves me with a huge deficit of 8000. This has led to a continued accumulation of debt especially in the school which my children attend, shops where I take food on credit etc. I long to live free of debt.
