How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because through the transfers, I managed to purchase a motorbike. The bodaboda business has brought a positive change into my life because, in a day, I have been earning KES 1000. I am now able to pay all my bills on time, including school fees for my children. Also, fending for my children's needs have been so easier as compared to before whereby, I used to depend on the odd jobs with very low income and sometimes getting the daily bread was not attainable. I feel there is a huge relief in my life because with this motorbike I believe I will achieve most of my long-time dreams. In addition to that, my house is not decent enough which makes me proud day by day courtesy of GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done so well in my entire village and has made a great impact. This is clearly seen since most of the people in my village have decent houses whereby the previous ones were small grass-thatched. Also, our children are no studying comfortably as compared to before whereby they could drop out of school could not afford to pay the fees on time. Therefore I do not see any sector GiveDirectly did wrong
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as fifteen pieces of irons sheets at 980 each, and timber. This was for the completion of my house because the initial one was not in a good state. To add to that I gave the mason KES 4800 as the labour charge. Also, I spent KES 18000 on cleared school fees for my daughter who was in high school sitting for her final examination. I am glad the money came in good time becasue I doubt if they could allow her to do her exams. In addition to that, I bought a new bed and mattress at KES 11500 for my children since the previous one was very small. With the remaining amount of money I bought enough food and decent clothes

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by the loud vibration from my mobile phone. I decided to ignore it but later I became curious and decided to check. I found out that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, I had received my first transfer as promised and I was so happy about it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to buy a secondhand motorbike purpsly for business. I opted to buy it because my spouse is a qualified driver and he was employed by a firm d and paid on commission. The money was too little to cater to the family's daily needs. I was also depending on casual jobs which still could not sustain the needs. We are now glad as a family because the money that my spouse will be getting from the business will all be ours. This is promising that our lives will never be the same again. I am so grateful because I now have two sources of income from casual jobs and from the business. I am positive that I will no longer strain in meeting the family's needs like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some building materials which include, iron sheets, building poles, and nails. This was purposely for the completion of my house which I was initially constructing and I did not have enough money to purchase the remaining materials. I later bought a second-hand motorbike specifically for business. I used the remaining amount of money in buying foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I used to own a clothes business and I could supply to ceremonies such as weddings but it collapsed due to insufficient capital. Since then I am housewife who depends on my husband's charcoal selling business. This has resulted to a struggle in providing for the family and our house is even half complete. My children spend very cold nights and I am not so happy about it. Therefore, receiving this money means I will revive my business and also set up a general kiosk for my husband in order to have a stable source of income. In addition, I will complete my house to save my family the agony of suffering from the cold.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. I enjoy this time a lot because I get sufficient rest after a long day of energy draining activities. My day is normally characterized by farm work and everlasting household chores.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband was involved in a grisly road accident in 2011 that left him half dead. This forced him to spend 6 months in the hospital, a condition that drained all our financial resources. I even sold over 20 goats to finance the medical bill and it wasn't sufficient and we resorted to fund raising. A year later, his leg which was badly injured by then was amputated. This worsened the situation as he couldn't actively engage in casual jobs and I had already lost my business. Since then, we have never recovered and my family suffers financial constraint which is our biggest hardship.
