What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is a motorcycle rider. In the past few months, my husband has struggled to provide for the family because of poor business and also poor health. He developed chest pains and severe cough because of the extreme cold weather he encounters in the morning and late in the evening. Because of this, he had to skip work on some days and, being the only breadwinner, we slept hungry on certain days. Few weeks before receiving the money, I also fell ill and when I received the money, I was thrilled because we were really struggling as a family. I spent KSH 1300 from the transfer to seek medical attention for my husband and I. I spent the remaining amount of KSH 1700 to buy food. The health conditions of my husband could not allow him to go to work and we had no food left in the house. Buying the food ensured that my family will not stay hungry.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of 10 children. Providing food for my family was the greatest challenge. Without employment and my husband working as a motorcycle taxi driver, feeding our family satisfactorily was demanding. The burden was relieved when I started receiving money from GiveDirectly. I used the recent transfer to buy food. Being a festive season, I bought food ( maize flour, rice, wheat flour) in bulk. My children were very happy. They celebrated like the rest households in the community.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different now in that I can buy food for my family regularly. When I was not receiving the money, I used to sleep hungry at times, and this was harrowing for me to see my kids go to bed on empty stomachs. The situation is slowly changing, and with time, I am sure everything will be better for my family and me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well because it provides us funds directly rather than buying things for us. This has helped me a lot in that I can plan on what I will do with the money according to my needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received a total of KSH 3000 from Give Directly. Upon receiving the money, I spent KSH 1200 and bought maize flour to cook meals for my family. The main challenge I was facing at that time was a lack of food. I have no job, and my husband does casual jobs. The jobs are not that reliable, and sometimes he goes and returns home empty-handed. When I received the money, that was a priority for me. I saved the rest of the money just in case of an emergency. I will use the money.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was sitting inside my house thinking hard about the life situation I was in. My phone rang and when I looked into it I found that I had received the cash. I was very happy. I immediately rushed to the Mpesa shop, withdrew the cash and headed straight to school, and paid school fees for my kids.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Yes, it makes a big difference. My husband is a motorcyclist and the job he does is not enough to be able to satisfy the needs of the family due to the economic conditions. The struggles we are going through are too much. Now that my kids are in school I am very happy and satisfied with that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of six children who are all currently in school. My children had all been sent back home due to school fee balance and did not have any money to pay their school fees. My children had spent one week at home without setting foot in school. I was trying to find ways to get cash all this time but nothing seemed to have worked. Luckily enough I received money from GiveDirectly and used the whole amount of KSH 1200 to pay school fees for my kids to be able to go back to school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The closure of our shop business caused me to become a housewife. My current source of income is subsistence farming and it occurs seasonally. My husband, therefore, shoulders the entire responsibility of meeting our basics. It saddens me to see him struggle beyond his capacity to make ends meet. It is my greatest desire to participate in boosting our economic status. In this regard, I plan to pool transfers with him to reopen the retail shop.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My heart is always at peace when everyone in my family is well. Waking up everyday to a healthy family has brought me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial problem is the biggest challenge that I deal with. This has resulted in a hustle when it comes to meeting the family's needs. Food is the most sensitive necessity but we can spend up to three days without it. It breaks my heart to watch my children cry with hunger yet I cannot change the situation.
