How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that, I was able to start livestock rearing like others in the village with the help of the transfer. This is my reliable source of income which I will rely on whenever I face any financial needs. In addition, I was able to full pay schools fees for my kids for the rest of the year. Initially, I not able to pay their fees due to the poverty life and they could spend some weeks at home because of the huge fees. Also, we are now staying in a decent shelter after construct a new house . I will no longer have to repair my house frequently after construct an Iron roofed one. Back in the days, I use to stay in an grass-thatched house requires maintenance every 6 months.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the money from GiveDirecty brought a lot of development in my village, initially we had been trained on how best we can use our transfer and this is what the organisation did so well. I don't see anything that it did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $150 my transfer to complete the construction of my house, I bought cement and sand to put a floor in the house. I had begun the construction but I lack enough money to finalize it. I also invested on livestock keeping by purchasing 2 goats, this was my future investment for the kids because I planning to sale them in the future to educate my kids when they multiply. With remaining amount of money, I paid school fees and bought uniform for the children. Lastly, I save some for our daily needs like food and any emergency.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was working at the farm on that day that I received the transfers, and I had left my phone back in the house. When I came back to the house at around mid day, I checked my phone only to find the Mpesa message. I was very happy as I could now accomplish the projects which I had in mind, that had stalled due to finances.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own livestock, I can now proceed with tailoring as a business, and my children can comfortably go to school now. The proceeds that I will get from sewing and from the livestock, will also sustain our livelihood as a family, as well as, enable my children to go to school. I am grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to purchase two cows and two goats, to purchase a sewing machine, and to buy school uniform for my children who returned back to school recently. I had previously acquired some training in tailoring, but I did not have my own sewing machine to enable me to start the business. I bought a sewing machine which will enable me to earn some income as I sew for people for some pay. I also bought livestock with an aim to make a profit out the livestock in future. I hope these livestock can reproduce and earn me an income in future either by sale of milk or beef/meat. I have six children and I sell charcoal for a living. My husband sells traditional brew made from coconut. We are truly grateful to GiveDirectly as we were able to progress our lives in ways that we couldn't have, had we not received the transfers.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has been to practice livestock keeping, but due to financial challenges, this dream has never come to pass. Receiving this money means fulfilling it. I am planning to spend 60,000 shillings to purchase 3 indigenous dairy cows. This is going to generate income for my family. In a day I can sell 10 liters and make 300 shillings. This is going to sustain all our basic needs. Other than that, I am planning to spend the rest of the remaining transfer to purchase a sewing machine. I trained on the tailoring and design course. The money I will be made from tailoring, I will save and educate my children in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is my happiest part of the day. This is because the atmosphere is favorable and allows me to do my casual job of burning charcoal. Unlike in the afternoon when it is too hot .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Coming from a polygamous family and the only bread winner has never been easy. I am a charcoal vendor. This job is energy draining and earns me 150 shillings. This is not enough to cater for all our needs.Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest challenge.
